  1. Ok, these are my system specs.

    P3 1ghz (yup I just upgraded)

HP Vectra bought used with two 7200 rpm IDE hard disks.
    Intel Chipset
    Hauppage and Pinnacle PCTV
    384 MGB RAM.

    I think that's enough.

Well in my research I can only capture full rez if my colorspace is YVU9 (which looks very good with hauppage VFW drivers; pinnacle WDM DON'T)with VirtualDub (note: I can't go above 640x480 in NTSC - PAL can go to 704x576 but doesn't look to good).

Now on many pages they say to set colorspace to YUY2 with Huffyuv as compressor.

I did that and no go, lot's of dropped frames.

So if I consider that for example copy/paste operation on my computer is about 7 megs a second from one drive to the other, and if I consider that capture data-rate with no dropped frames on my PC is also about 10 megs a second, that DOES leave me with only that MUCH mgb's per second to capture > meaning I can't do full res.

My max capture setting with YUY2 are so far up to 352x480 with no dropped frames.

So considering that most of us have 7200 rpm hard disks (at least I believe so) what's the deal then?

I use a canopus advc via firewire. I have used a Leadtek 2000 and was able to capture uncompressed AVI, think the final video was 80gb for an hour. I forget it's been a while.

    Hi dinkob,

Please check and see if the DMA option is ON for the IDE channel under the Device Manager.

Do not touch the mouse or the keyboard during capture. Best to stop other programs.

  4. Copy - Paste is not a valid comparison, the PC stops to read the data.

Try upping the buffers in Vdub, also use the striping function to cap audio to the other drive. This should minimize the problem.

  5. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try working on some of those later and see how it goes.
