I have a DVD where a friend of mine recorded several dances of our dance studio. When I decrypted it, they show up on my HDD as a VOB file. I want to be able to completely separate each of the dances (chapters?) into independent discrete files (either avi or mpeg) that I can then be small enought that I could perhaps email or burn in standard CDs.

Can someone please tell me which programs to use and the process for getting to descrete AVI files and also MPEG files.

I've tried to figure it out myself by reading all of the different posts, but there are so many programs and guides and I get confused with some of the terminology. Thanks for helping out.

    Regards,

Open the VOBs in DVD2AVI and then save your project.

Use TMPGEnc and use the saved project from DVD2AVI as your source for your VCD. You can select your individual dances using the source range setting in TMPGEnc.

Does the title of this thread sound like it would be of use to you?

You probably would've found it with a simple search before posting an very similar question...

As for DVD to MPG - that'll be in the conversion guides... Again, you would've found this with a simple browse...

You'll find that there's loads of info here - it just needs a little digging by looking up guides, searching in the forums etc.

If you get stuck with something or really can't find what you're looking for it's best to say that you've tried looking for it when you post...

DVD to MPG is pretty straight forward - you'll need to look into "demuxing" (short for "demultiplexing", or "separating") the VOBs back into MPGs.

I'd suggest you for the MPGs coz they'll be smaller than going to AVI, unless you use a high compression codec like Divx or Xvid for the AVI (I'm thinking about burning to CD for posting by snail-mail).

To have a file small enough to make it realistic to email, you could look into converting to WMV (small resoultion, lowish bitrate) using Windows Movie Maker (I have version 2 with XP, and this does it). It's free to download from MS.

    Good luck...
