  1. Why would you want to use shrink when it takes 100% cpu compaired to clone useing 15-20 %. Or I'm I missing something.

  2. DVDShrink will make any DVD with menus region free cloneDVD will not do this. DVDshrink can take a flipper DVD and put it on one side cloneDVD can not do this. DVDshrink has higher setting for a better picture takes long but gives better picture. DVDshrink is free clonedvd you have to pay for.

Do not get me wrong I like CloneDVD I think some times one program might be better for one job then another I also use DVD2ONE and IC8

  3. It does not use 100% unless you want it to. You can put it in low priority mode. But still, it's fast and easy.

  4. Still uses 100% in low pri. mode at least for me. The real problem started with shrink rebooting my rig, randomly mind you so trying to find out why has been a bear. Also same media different out come. Random freeze on comp. but not on set topbox. Tried Clone it was faster than Shrink and played fine in rig and box. I do like Shrink and the lateest version but why over tax my cpu when I don't have to. I'm not sure if thats a ? or not.(shrink works fine when it wants to, if I google my problems I get answers from it's SP2 to Power supply)

    Koja,

Your problem could be any number of things.

    It could be overheating.

It could be bad chipset drivers.

It could be the bios needs flashing.

It could be a faulty power supply.

It could be you need more memory.

  6. Yes your right, but it is deffinantly that I need more money to solve this prob. But still it is enjoyable to try and solve with out replaceing hardware( I have tried drivers and bios). I guess I'll stick with Clone untill it goes screwy.

  7. That's weird, Shrink has never even come close to using 100%. Maybe 25% at the most and it's usally done in the same time as Clone would be. Both are good programs, I just like the more options that shrink has.

I used to have an 850MHz Duron, and DVDShrink consumed close to a hundred percent of resources on that setup. Then I upgraded to a 2.1GHz Athlon, and now it uses about thirty percent, if that. Trying to multitask during a Deep Analysis is pretty daft, anyway.

Using more resources during an encode and getting a better-looking disc is always preferable, anyway.

  9. I don't want to multi task while encodeing, I'm happy to let Shrink do it's job. I don't like the fact that it uses 100% of my cpu and I've seen my temp reach 70 C . I did find a long thread in some fourm might have been this one where someone asked the same question about Shrink and cpu useage. All answers stated that encodeing will use close to 100% but when I installed and ran Clone it uses about 20%. And discs made with Clone look the same as dics made with Shrink when viewed on the pioneer box and the trinitron. But I like the features of Shrink more than Clone I like That Shrink now makes ISO's and opens up Decrypter.

You wouldn't happen to have Norton SystemWorks installed, too? I made the silly mistake of putting that on my HD, and as soon as I did, it slowed all of my encodes to a crawl. I might as well have ripped out the 2.1 GHz Athlon and put the 850 MHz Duron back in.

  11. My PC has locked during encodes at 100% CPU and it was a over heating problem. Unscrewed the fan and gave it a good clean and its all fine again.
Why the problem with your CPU being at 100%? Just means you're getting value for money, it it sat at 20% all the time you might as well have bought a slower PC and saved some money.

Your PC is overheating. Open it up and clean out all the dust -- especially out of the CPU heatsink and fan. Maybe add a case fan or two.

The CPU fan may also be failing. You may need to replace it. Or you can replace the heatsink/fan with a bigger better one.

That was my thoughts as well. There is a heat issue.

  14. Why yes I do have norton sys. works, but while trying to solve this I have disabled it. At one point I to assumed it to be over heating problem, well I say assumed, it probally very well is. Fan speed remains the same as it did when this clunker was new. Does not get cold here in fl. but I had the window open and the room temp. was 47 F. cpu temp. still went up high. This problem of rebooting is very random she may encode fine while hot or she may reboot when cooler.

  15. Virtually all Athlon XP motherboards have the temperature sensor under the CPU. If that sensor is reading 70 degrees the CPU itself is running much hotter than 70 degrees. Running an Athlon XP processor that hot is asking for trouble.

I have an Athlon XP 1700+ in one of my systems. When it's running at 100 percent the CPU the temperature doesn't go above 50 degrees C unless the office is very hot.

I'll say it again since you seem to be glossing over the subject: you must get your CPU temperature down. At the least clean the dust out the current heat sink if it's dusty (and if you've had the system for more than a year -- it is!).

Fans are cheap ($5 to $10 each) so adding a fan or two to the case is probably the first thing to try. Getting the case temperature down may be enough go get the CPU running at a more acceptable temperature.

If that doesn't do it a better heat sink and CPU fan is in order. Consider something like the Zalman 7000 series if it will fit in your case:

Get rid of it. It took the encoding performance of my Athlon XP 2800+ back to a Duron 850 as soon as it had been installed. Even after I removed it from the hard drive, I had to reformat and reinstall Windoze to get the performance that I had paid so much for back.

The other diagnosis, that your CPU is running too hot, should also be investigated. Most lock-ups during tasks such as disc reading or camera interfacing can be traced directly back to problems with the CPU or motherboard.

  17. Ok I think of my rig as a toy albit a very powerful toy. It brings me great joy. I don't mind formating my drive which is what I did. All this may seem off topic but really it does come back to Shrink or at least Shrink is the catalyst. I used to monitor my cpu temp. with MBM 5 always around 40-50 C I have not used it in awhile(I like to format, cleans the "S" out don't you know) So I have not used it in awhile. I was checking temp. by hitting delete at start up. Just insalled MBM5 again it shows a 20 degree diff. than bios set up page. Cheap ECS?
Ok now for something completely different wink wink nudge nudge. And I know that you know that I know what I'm doing with these progs. A movie that I bought two months ago, I can still copy with Shrink but a movie I bought yesterday Shrink will not even open it. Any clues as to what they have done.

If you have bought the DVD, then there's no wink wink nudge nudge about it

This whole site was formed around the basis that fair use (making a copy of something that you own) is OK.

FWIW, it wasn't Resident Evil: Apocalypse by any chance ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  19. Shrink (or most well-written programs) should use 100% CPU. the whole point of an operating system is to allocate computing resources. shrink will use less than 100% on powerful PC's as then the memory/disk bottleneck is the chokepoint. The CPU % used by individual programs when multitasking is more problematic, any program that uses 100% and denies resources to other programs is generally badly written.
When shrink is running, open task mgr and set the priority to low, this should help, albeit at the cost of time.

  20. Why yes it is Res. evil apop

  21. Ok I got side tracked with Res Evil, but it's on disc now. Now that I have formated Shrink does not use 100% any more it fluctuates from 20 to 48%. I have always run it in low priority mode, Something was going on I'm not sure what. I could not stand not having Norton System Works on my computer. It does not seem to slow down encodeing.

currently deep analysing at 100% CPU usage on a 3000+, current CPU temp is 44, MB temp is 24. Both well within range.

  23. OK I think I am still on topic because Shrink started this for me. CPU temp.: MBM5 ambit temp is close to NVIDIA's ambit temp. so I'm going to go with MBM5's CPU temp. The hardware monitor for my mobo is starting out so high and maintaining that the temp. is so high, that I don't think this rig would even be stable. Damn ECS!!. After formating my HD, Shrink did not use 100% CPU, still not sure what that was about.
Blank media: I have three different kinds all behave differently. A few weeks ago I had backed up a movie that would randomly freeze my set top box. Took it out breathed on it wiped it, played lovely. Tonight I sat down to watch Manchurian Canidate(what a good movie) sum biotch would randomly freeze. Ok common sense tells you that if it's random it's not the files. Took it out, breath, wipe better but still freezeing in the same general area. Took it out held disc under faucet wiped dry. Random freezes not in the exact spot but same area. Took it out held under faucet SCRUBED with finger wiped dry. This disc went from a coaster to a lovely back up.
