  1. One thing I like about Windows Movie Maker is that it has an option of capturing the entire DV tape and then it splits up the video into different clips. Each clip represents one complete recording session. In other words, for everytime that you record and stop, it splits it into a different clip. Does any other software have this functionality. The reason I'm asking is because I only have Windows 2000 at home, and Windows Movie Maker is only available for Windows XP.

    Thanks

There are many video editing software apps that do scene detection. I have used Pinnacle Studio 8 and Ulead Video Studio 8. I am pretty sure that Scenalyzer Live, which really just a capture software app, also does scene detection.

Take a look in the Tools section of this site at video editing software. That should give you a good place to start looking. Most software apps have trial versions that you can try before buying.

    Happy hunting!

  3. With WinDV I'm pretty sure you can set it to do that. It's just a matter of adjusting the settings, i think and it's free. I'm a WinDV "convert" - I previously didn't see the use of it when my editing programs (WMM2, Pinnacle 9) have a capture feature. However, the reason I use WinDV now is because it is basically a "capture (trtansfer) only program that is NOT a system hog. I think this greatly reduces system seisures - I've never had a problem with WinDV yet.

  4. I'm Anti-Microsoft biased with mostly everything. WinDV rules. If you want decent bloatware, Ulead VideoStudio does automatic scene splitting.

There are two kinds of scene detection. DV metadata includes camcoder start and stop info and this is used by most programs for "poor man's" scene detection.

Scenalyzer and some other more high end programs also do "optical" scene detection using image content analysis to extract scenes. This even works with TV captures or dubs.
