I am trying capture with a ADS A/V PYRO link and use Vegas Video 4 to edit. I will file transfer to my desktop to burn dvd. I did encounter a problam with the PYRO Link on the laptop but not on the desktop. The laptop capture was a scrambled screen and static in the audio. ADS tech support told me I that it may be my firewire cadbus. I have IOGEAR card and they suggested a TI chipset card. I will make the treck to FRY's to get this afternoon. I just want to know if this system has the power to do it.

    Laptop

    AMD Athelon xp2500+
40 gig 5400 rpm hard drive
    512 memory
    xp home

    Desktop

    Celeron 1.5
    120 gig 7200 rpm hardrive
    256 memory
    xp home

    Any help will be appreciated....

    Thanks,
Would an external hardrive improve any of my capture (drop frames) or improve my render quality or time?

    thanks, again

An external HD may not improve your transfer speed, but it would give you a lot more room for storage, which is probably lacking with your laptop.

I have a IO Firewire card and wasn't able to run both my ADVC-100 and the external drive at the same time, but had no problem with DV transfer to the laptop.

An external drive may be faster, but you won't really know until you try it.
