I have so many questions and do not know where to begin.
Ok.........
1. What is the best software for writing comperssing etc. ?
2. When saving video to your computer to work with later what is the BEST ( QUALITY ) to record with ?
3. How do I put 1 meg video onto an 800 meg cd ?
4. What is the compression for COMMERCIAL DVD's ?
5. Why are we not able to record a dvd that can be played on any dvd player ? Why can the commercial disks be played on any player ?
Lots more questions to come as I think of them.

1) Whatever works best for you.
2) If you intend editing later, save in avi using either no compression or a lossless compression like Huffyuff.
3) By compressing it down to 800 Meg.
4) See What is DVDR at the top left.
5) Commercial disks are pressed not written so aren't identical. Most modern DVD players will play written DVDs (something like 98% for DVD-R) but not all due to the slight variations on laser wavelength and dye composition.

1. DVD SHRINK (to compress) and NERO (to burn) are most popular.
2. I think you meant "HUFFYUV"MJPEG is good too (don't confuse with MPEG).
3. What he said.

what codec is out there that videosilva and I could use that has absolutely no compression
Be ready for some BIG files. Uncompressed RGB at 720x480, 29.97 fps is about 112 GB/hour.

1) Nero is probably the most popular for burning, for simple editing you can use any number of programs (even Windpws Movie Maker), for more complicated semi-pro type use, most seem to use either Adobe Premiere or Ulead Mediastudio Pro. For compressing, either of the above, Mainconcept Cinema Craft Encoder or Tmpgenc.
2) The best realistic quality for editing is, as has already been stated, uncompressed avi. If you must compress it use Huffyuv or Picvideo MJPEG. If you can't handle file sizes as big as you are doing to be working with, buy a bigger hard drive.
3) When I first read your question I thought you were asking how to fit a 1 Gb file onto an 800 Mb CDR. If this is the case, shrink it down to 800 Mb with DVDShrink. If the question really is how do you fit a 1 Mb file onto an 800 Mb CDR, the answer is simple, leave 799 Mb blank!
4) Look at the top left of this page and you will see a blue area headed "What Is". Under that is DVDR. Although this talks about writable DVD disks the same is true for commercially pressed disks. The compression is mpeg 2 with a bitrate of around 9 Mbs.
5) When we burn a DVD we use a laser to burn holes in a dye layer on the surface of the disk to make the data stream. A commercially produced DVD has those same holes but they are pressed in instead of being burnt in. The format is exactly the same, only the manufacturing method is different. The reason why some players are particular about playing burnt disks is down to the precise wavelength of the laser in use and the colour, and hence the refractive index, of the dye.

Yes that was my question. How do 1 put a one gig. mpeg, avi or what ever file on a vcd or svcd disk ( 800 megs )

Hmmmmmmm, interesting.

It's my Wedding VIdeo I'm trying to redit. The " VIDEO " was shot almost 20 years ago. The video quality is still VERY decent.
The video is spread on 2 two hour unedited video tapes. It is NTSC video .......... I recently had the two video tapes recorded onto DVD with a DVD recorder providing me with 2 disks of unedited film.
I recently aquired a DVD burner, I grabbed one of the disks and dragged the files onto my computer. Now I have this video on my computer with all these files. I have tried several programs and none are able to see the files ?
I want to open a program that sees the files and allows me to edit them. ANY encoding what so ever is unacetable since I can not allow any further degration of this video.
I want to edit the video to possibly 2 or less hours. I need to be able to cut /edit sections and trasformations etc. and be able to keep the audio track..............
Any ideas are appreciated.
