  1. i used tmpgenc dvd author 1.6 to convert about 15 mpgs(about 220mb) total size after using tmpgenc was 3.29gb but when i burnt it on a DVD+R the output was black and white and there was a white streak going horizontally on the bottom from left to right. but when i play back the vob files in the comp it plays back fine in WMP with color and sound. any suggestions as to how i can fix this or was it just a bad burn?

btw its 15mpgs but is the VTS_01_1 vob files is suppose to be from VTS_01_1 .... VTS_01_15 right? but instead its VTS_01_1 .... VTS_01_4.

any ideas why the dvd plays back in b/w and the white line? its sorta like when your video cable for the dvd player isnt plugged in correctly.

btw this is the guide i followed to author the dvd https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/172123.php

Sounds like an NTSC/PAL issue. Where are you located and what's the FPS of the video?

  4. this is wierd i cant figure out how i can fix this hope someone can help. i have 2 dvd players, 1 is the Apex 1165 and the other is the Panasonic S27.

ive been able to play everything i throw at the Panasonic that ive burned from dvd images to s/vcds, this happened to be my first time authoring a DVD. i tried playing the DVD with the panasonic and i get black and white colors and the big white line in the bottom. just now i tried my Apex and it has a function in the Video setup(i think its under TV Mode dont rember), originally it was at AUTO, and got the same play back as above, 2nd time i chose PAL and same thing. last i did NTSC and it plays fine!.

i havent been able to find this option of changing PAL and NTSC in the panasonic setup. my question is am i doing something wrong in the MPG to DVD process cause the mpg is PAL but why am i able to view it perfectly as NTSC in the Apex? if i am doing something wrong in the reauthoring then ill keep the $70 player if not i guess ill just have to stick with the cheaper player and return the expensive one since it has less options.

    any suggestions?!?

    thanks in advance!

You live in NTSC land and your DVD is PAL (25 fps). Luckily you have a player that will do the conversion for you on the fly, as you discovered not all of them will.

  6. hey zippy, my question is if the DVD i authored(from MPG->DVD) is PAL, any ideas why when i change the TV Mode in the Apex im able to play it fine in NTSC but not PAL? shouldnt it be TV Mode PAL thats allowing the DVD to play. btw is the PAL/NTSC playback different from S/VCDs? cause ive burned alot of S/VCDs some PAL some NTSC and plays back fine.

so its just the way the MPG was made, i didnt do any thing wrong in the conversion right? would any other program such as DVDLab also produce the same output? any way around this by changing settings or using another program?

    thanks again.

That setting is telling your DVD player to output NTSC signals irrespective of the disk format. It is a PAL disk but your player is converting it to NTSC for you. Your TV only accepts NTSC input.

  8. thanks for your reply bugster, i get it now.

btw is from now on when doing MPG to DVD if the MPG is NTSC then it would have no problem playing back but if its a PAL mpg then theres no way around it right.

how about s/vcds they dont have that kinda restriction, is that why it plays no matter if its PAL or NTSC?

There is a way round it, several in fact.
    1) Easiest is to get a DVD player that does a PAL to NTSC conversion in HW, like your APEX apparently does. Plenty to choose from that do this, but not so much the big brand names and often you have to examine the specs closley as it seems it is not a wideley advertised feature.

    2) Buy a multi-system TV that accepts both PAL and NTSC input. Common in Europe but not so common in the US it seems.

    3) Buy a seperate standalone converter. That way you can use your DVD player with any TV, and use any DVD player too.

    4) Do the conversion in software. Quite a bit of effort and learning required, but it can be done. Several guides and loads of threads on various methods for doing this.

Hmmm, that is quite odd, I can't explain that one. Are you absolutley certain that you can play PAL (S)VCD's on yout NTSC only TV with both players

  10. i remember having PAL MPGs and NTSC MPGs and when i burned it with Nero i had to choose either PAL or NTSC in the Video CD tab. i dont remember which vcds were PAL or NTSC but i know it played back fine.

the option in the Video CD table in nero where it has

    Encoding Resolution
    o PAL
    o NTSC

thats basically the same as making a PAL vcd or NTSC vcd right? hmm maybe ill try using another program like DVDLab.

    thanks again for your help.

If you have a PAL mpg, and select NTSC in Nero, it will re-encode it to NTSC standards. That is probably why it worked for you.
