I'm thinking of buying a Sony DRU 810A. I have a couple of questions.
1. I studied on the forum that the DRU 810A is the same thing as the BenQ 1640, and people recommend the BenQ because its cheaper. Where I live, both the drives are the same price and I have some very bad experience with BenQ, so should I just buy the Sony drive
2. I am also considering a Samsung Shw 162 burner but I think the Sony is better than the Samsung.
3. My last and main question is that the drives available here are all "made in china" People tell me that chinese drives are not as good as other international drives. Is this any true? are Chinese drives crap? Should I buy the Chinese DRU 810A or try to procure a "not made in china" version?
Thanks. :P

Isn't everything else in your computer made in China?
Lite-On (Taiwan) has an excellent reputation generally but has made some duds. Ben-Q is a joint Chinese venture with Philips. Designs come from Philips. Sony is just a distributor for both Lite-On or Ben-Q drives these days. Ignor Sony.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

Get the SONY 810A drive which you already know is a rebadged 1640 drive. There has been speculation that the BENQ drives made in china weren't as good as the RETAIL drives that are made in malaysia. I think that's fool of baloney. Most computer components are made in china to begin with. I have 4 BENQ 1640 drives all made in china and have not had any problems with them. The made in china vs made in malaysia is full of shit!
Finding a 1640 drive is nearly impossible because BENQ has just released the 1655 drive and the crappy DQ60 drive. If you really want the BENQ 1640 you're going to have to settle on getting the SONY 810A or the PLEXTOR 740A drive which both are REBADGED BENQ 1640 drives. Those drives can be crossflashed to the OFFICIAL BENQ FIRMWARE where you can then use QSUITE which is a tool used to tweak your burns. It remembers the write strategy for known and unknown dvd media. It kicks ass!!! -
I thought evrything made in china was shit but I see well known names like sony and plextor (supposed to be the best ?) being mentioned as made in china. So what is actually made in Japan ? Now I'm confused.
-
In the 70's...."Made In Japan" supposedly meant that it was junk. I wonder how long it will take before "Made In China" no longer means that is junk as well.

I don't believe in the socalled rebage quality of product since a got my Sony DRU710A accourding to online source is the same as Lite-On SOHW-1633SA.
All I can say BS. Had both and let me tell you the SONY was able to burn better using just about any media codes. Drives may have been made in the same location but the quality requirements must be defferent for SONY than that of lite-on. In other words get the SONY one. -
