I started to backup my DVD's about 12 months ago. At first I did experience some problems because my burner was installed in an external USB2 enclosure. Having the burner in that enclosure caused many coasters, I do not think that External USB problem (SCSI abort command) has been overcome to date. It was only writing 1k lead in and then SCSI command abort. I removed the burner from the external enclosure and installed it in my tower .... that move overcame all of my problems.

OS XP Pro - P4 2.0 \ 756Mb and I have a Pioneer 106D Burner and now have no problems at all using the following method.

    1. Use Shrink to re-author and backup to a single ISO file. (drive is formatted NTFS)
    2. Then burn with DVD Decriptor. (both applications are free)

Since using this method, I have experienced no problems whatsoever. I use the cheapest media I can find which happens to be Princo and have stuck to that brand for the last 12 months. (58c each, no coasters, skips, freezes or the like, perfect backups)

I just purchased Define DVD blanks (93c each) on ebay simply because they were quoted as being made in Japan. I bought 100, 25 for my son and 25 for both grandsons and 25 for myself. With Dvd Info I discovered the blanks are TYG02, at 93cents each, I believed I was on a winner. The blanks have no indentification at all on them.

I made a backup on one of them to satisfy myself they were OK before giving them to my family and when played on my DVD player experienced for the first time pauses, split frames etc. When played in my burner the discs are not seen, assumes blank media is in the drive. However, my Pioneer DVD reader plays them through without any problems at all, perfect backup.

I am finding it difficult to understand the problem, the discs not being read in my burner, playing faultlessly in my reader and the problems occuring when played in my DVD player. Nothing like this as ever happened before.

In future, I'll stick with the Princo's and forget ever buying on ebay again. That said, I would still like to know the possible cause of the above mentioned events.

All comments from members would be very much appreciated, in the meantime, have a safe and happy Christmas.

Smells like FAKE MEDIA to me. I'm not familiar with that brand. Gen-An knows more about Japanese media, so hopefully he can come and comment on this.

    Typical reader laser issue.

Seems about twice what they ought to be charging. Especially bad if they're fake You can buy genuine TYG02 now at Rima for 48 cents each:

  4. You're sticking with PRINCO? And they've never caused you problems??

It's 3RD CLASS media, but it works just fine ... when it works.
Just make sure you verify all the burns.

  7. The Princos I burned about 6 months ago were verified and tested with nero cd/dvd speed "scandisk" and "file test" and dvdinfopro. i was very paranoid. Same disks 6 months later, only used 1-2 times (no scratches), same drive isn't able to read them. ??

    Hey Cap,

I noticed that these discs have a thermal printable surface ... any problem with labeling them with a sharpie? I need to stock on up my DVD-Rs.

I like to use Sharpie on both thermal and inkjet print media. Seems to take the ink better.

  12. question, I just bought some "that's" dvd-r's (i posted about this few weeks back). I burned one and it went fine. It's supposed to be taiyo yuden. when I did dvdinfo check on it, it says TYG01. Question, is it possible that the code could also be faked on dvd's, or are codes pretty legit and solid?

Codes are easy to fake. Has been happening since 2001.

    - It started when Princo forged TDK codes, 2001-2002.
    - Sony codes were forged next in 2002.
    - Then Infosmart of Hong Kong forged MXLRG01 in 2003.
    - Ritek was forged late 2003, early 2004.
    - And most recently TYG02 was forged. Again by Infosmart.

Really sucks for buyers. You find fake media in "generic" or "house brand" media, unethical stores selling it as legit, eBay, etc.

Advice? Buy trusted brand names or buy from certified/reputable dealers. Most media companies have authorized dealers listed on their sites.

"That's" is apparently a well-known "brand name" under which Taiyo Yuden is officially released in Asia. I had just never seen it until very recently (I do not live in Asia, never even visited).

Hrm, can't say I've ever heard of the "Define" brand. Branded TY I know of is Maxell, Fujifilm, That's, JVC/Victor, TDK, Samsung (T01), Panasonic, Verbatim and Emgeton (brand in Europe).

It sure sounds like fake media but one suggestion on your process.

Try having DVDShrink output to a VIDEO_TS folder THEN make an ISO FILE yourself using the CLASSIC VERSION of ImgTools

You can even set up ImgTools to auto launch DVD Decrypter and start burning.

    Why do I say this?

Not sure I trust the way DVDShrink makes an ISO FILE.

ImgTools (the classic version only) has been proved to be a winner as is DVD Decrypter as your burning application.

But yeah ... it's probably fake media.

FulciLives and others, I am beginning to believe you guys are right. I backed a my DVD Armageedon 3 times using DVD Shrink encoding to a single ISO image and all 3 finished up being faulty. I then burned the same file on Princo and no problems at all. I have never used TY's and according to the expects around the globe they are rated the very best, I was somewhat dissappointed. I have arranged to return and receive a refund. Having said that, I will end up being out of pocket $25+ and that really p--ses me off as I could have bought 50 Princo's with that money. When placing an order with these sellers I really do expect to get what I pay for, perhaps I am still a bit niave.
