  1. Alright I successfully updated the firmware on the player. Only thing is someone in the house was curious and played the blank disc again and then interrupted the process because there was no response.

Now the player appears to be completely dead. When the stand-by light is on it shuts off immediately for minutes when the power-on or eject buttons are pressed.

I have no warranty. Somebody please tell me of any possible remedies!

Have you tried unplugging the unit for a while. This is the solution offered in the troubleshooter when the player stops responding due to static or other lockups

If you could find the original firmware you could try to update with that. Try a google search you may get lucky. The player may not respond to the same firmware version it thinks it already has (the 1109).

You could also try using the troubleshooter and then rejecting their solution then enter your problem and ask for help.

This is the link for the original 642/37 if yours is a 17 just change the 37 to 17 in the link and it will point you to the right player.

This macrovision story may only be just that (a story). Many users of the firmware disagree with that observation. I haven't tested it myself so don't know one way or the other. Did you test this yourself or just repeating what you heard?
Many feel that there are benefits to the upgrade. Check out this long thread it get's more specific about 1/2 way and to the end but other issues come up in this discussion.

I can't tell you in detail now as it's been a while but
I was not pleased with it as it wouldn't play most
of my XviD. It did DivX fine I remember, but that
was all ... played a couple XviD, a couple.

Yes I have tried it, When i first bought the player, I couldnt get it to play .Sub, this was after i tried the Macrovision , Then i upgraded the firmware, .Sub played fine, Tried Macrovision again this time nothing , I had a Cd sitting on the player ,that i thought was a VCD put it in, it started to update, It wasnt a VCD, tried to stop the update, Killed the player returned it,Got the new one home "Didnt" Update, It Played the .Sub and Didnt have Macrovision. I do not always believe what i read.
