  1. I've just tried out an NTSC clip on a VCD on my mulit region DVD player (Toshiba DR1) and it plays black and white. Isn't the whole point of multi region players that you can play NTSC things in a PAL country?? I can only think that it's the TV but it's a pretty standard home TV, I've never been under the impression TV's had regions too. What's the deal?

  2. If your TV has a SCART socket and your TV also supports RGB then use a SCART cable with RGB.

TVs and VCD discs don't have region codes. The black and white issue usually means that the player isn't correctly converting the signal. I would suggest you try vcd4ever's suggestion. If that doesn't help, try to hook up your player to another TV and if you get the same results, I'd blame the player. I have a pretty poor opinion of Toshiba's players. They sold some in the USA at one point that didn't play VCD at all, so I can't rule out that your player is not as good as you think it is.

  4. Just because it can play any region doesn't mean it can play any format. If you have an NTSC disc and a region-free but PAL-only player, no matter what you do it isn't going to play. You need a region free player as well as the ability to output in the format of your TV. My DVD player has a setting in the options to switch between PAL and NTSC, which defaults to whichever format the disc is and has to be changed manually. Take a look around and see if yours does too.
