  1. Hi, I have this movie from a friend burn into a DVD-R. The problem is that I want a back up of it but it won't play or recognize the DVD-R, but my DVD player can play the DVD. Why is that? How can I make it so the DVD-Rom can read the DVD-R that he burn? Any input is appreciated. Thank you.

Most likely your friend made the dvd hard to copy for people who borrow his dvds.

  4. If your DVD-ROM does not read DVDr, the only thing you can do is replace it with one that does.

It is not that uncommon for DVD rom drives (especially older models) to not read DVD+r or DVD-r, sometimes both.

Why not ask your friend to make the copy for you, after all it plays in your standalone, right!
