Hello,
Well this is my first post but I have done a great deal of research already about this and have yet to find a solution. I have a panasonic gs200 for refrence that takes pretty good video. But my problem now is encoding it so I can burn a DVD. Looking at the site I see that the tmpgenc encoder (for mpeg2) is usually favored while I have used this and many others I still get really bad pixalation on the video and not just during action.
Here is a link to the video that you can download to look at what I'm talking about http://angrylemming.com/pix.mpeg. (no audio on purpose) This is encoded in NTSC 30 frames with 2 pass VBR at 8000 max with 8000 average using tmpegenc. So it SHOULD be good. But too me buying expensive equipment and getting this as a end result with doesn't look that much better then my old VHSC camcorder is a waist of money. I also have a GL2 at work so I would like to be able to burn high quality movies. How do film studios do it. Let say money is not an option. (work is paying) But I would also like something for home use.
Any help would be greaty appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Looks alright to me,if you want studio results then spend $100,000+.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
I don't see any pixelation in your sample. Are you confusing pixelation with interlace artifacts?
There's no point in using two passes with both the max and average set at the same value. Might as well do CBR in a single pass.
I think the consensus is Tmpgenc is OK, but not the best MPEG encoder. In any case, I don't see any MPEG sort of problems in your file. -
I'm with junkmalle - there's no pixelation, you're probably referring to the interlacing effects because interlaced material is being played on a progressive monitor.
Use something like WinDVD or PowerDVD to play the MPEGs as those apps de-interlace the footage.
The real true test is to author to a re-writeable DVD and then play on the TV. That's where it's gonna end up, so that's where it should be previewed for quality.
Also, if the end product is shorter than about 1h 15m, then you'll be able to do CBR at 8Mbps based on an audio rate of 192kbps. As you're doing NTSC, you won't be able to use MP2 audio, so it'll have to be AC3.
Play around with the VideoHelp Bitrate Calculator to get ideas on durations and bitrates.
If it's over 1h 15m, go the VBR route with:
Max = 9Mbps
Min = 2,000. Some say less is OK, others say TMPGEnc needs the min at 2,000 - experiment.
Avg = Whatever the bitrate calculator gives for your time and audio rate.
The GL2 will help as it's a 3CCD cam with excellent optics etc.
Hope that helps. Good luck...There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

I gotta agree with everyone else here - I watched it in PowerDVD6 and I have to say, what are you expecting ?
Looked fantastic to me
... with the exception of maybe a color correction - seemd a little pale in places, but that might just be meIf in doubt, Google it. -
Me too. Looked great to me. Out of interest how did you capture this? Was it compressed, DV or some other format?
I have been playing around with the best codec to capture analogue video and have been using Picvideo's MJPEG codec but that has problems when edited in Premiere Pro 1.5 . Now I am looking at Morgan's instead

I was talking about the artifacts. Thanks for point out that I'm watching it on a progressive monitor. I didn't ever think about the fact that VBR wasn't necessary, now wonder it took a short time to encode.
Ichiu7- This was on DV and I captured using WinDV through firewire. So it was digital. Sorry can't help last time I just connected a coaxial to my tvtuner and while the movie was a little noisy it come out ok.
