WinDV, which is freeware, is simple and pretty much bullet proof.

Scenalyzer live is pretty good but is payware. It does have some scheduling capability as well.

  4. For DV transfer I'm just using whatever software I plan to edit in. I've used Windows Movie Maker 2 (free in windows), Ulead (came with DVD writer) and WinDV (free, as mentioned). All have given me perfect transfer (as far as I can tell). I ran tests on these by transferring some DV via firewire to my computer then putting that back into the camcorder. So far, each of these softwares have given me a copy identical (to my eye) when I play the Mini DV on my 27" TV.

One thing I learned here regarding DV "capture" is that it is the ONE step in DVD making where you shouldn't lose ANY quality - it is just a transfer. A good firewire cable and card and you're all set. If you don't have firewire, USB 2 might give you lousy results. I tested this as well because I just couldn't understand why USB 2, which as far as the specs say is FASTER than firewire, gives inferior DV transfer quality. Anyone know why this is?
