  1. Quick newbie question, bought my first DVD recorder last week, Philips 610.

Seems OK but in hind site maybe I should have got a Divx compatible player, as I muck around with Divx files on the net.

My question is does it ever happen that an update in Firmware will allow a DVD player to play Divx for instance.

    Hello,

I don't believe that's possible. I think it has to be chip based not JUST firmware......

AFAIK, Its never happened yet and is unlikley to happen in the future. A DVD player/recorder HW is not capable of playing divx no matter what you do to the Firmware.

In theory, a non DivX player might be a "dumbed down" DivX capable player (just hiding the fact, sold for less) but I doubt it in reality. Like Yoda says, the chip set has to be there...
