Your DVD writer should definetly support DMA, perhaps even UDMA (66 perhaps) in order to record over 1x, therefore you should focus on other things.

First thing to check is the flat cable. If it is the old-fashioned 40 conductor one, then it's not suitable. You should have the newer 80 conductor cables. You can identify them pretty easily since the conductor thickness is only half as much as the older ones.

However, it's a bit strange that the cable would generate such errors.

Next thing to check is the drivers for the IDE controller. I notice you have SP2. Did you install this recently? Did you have the burner before? Were you using the burner ok before SP2? Are the hard drives in PIO or DMA mode? What does control panel report (PIO or DMA) for each of the drives in the two channels?

These are typical questions that can lead to a solution.

Your motherboard or PC most likely came with a CD with drivers. Unless you have recently downloaded newer drivers for the chipset, use the CD and re-install them. Alternativelly download newest versions from the manufacturer's site.

What is the make and model of motherboard?
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  4. Sorry for the slow response just remembered my thread here ....

The drivers are all up to date as are the firmwares.

The problem was present before SP2

The Mobo is an MSI 865P Neo (i think thats correct ....)

The HDs are all in DMA mode.

The problem is not just with burning if im ripping an audio cd in DMA mode it says not able to do it but in PIO mode it does it but it slows the whole pc down.

I may try changing the cable but its the supplied cable so i cant see that as a problem (i also switched it with hd cable to same effect) ... a new decent cable wont cost much so it may be worth it.
