  1. Is there any capure software that will work with my Happauge PVR 250 card and will crop while it captures ?

This would be needed in order to crop out the bottom noise from VHS caps.

When I had my ATi TV Wonder card I used VirtualDub to crop while frameserving to TmpgEnc. Since the PVR 250 does mpeg capturing there is no longer a requirement for VirtualDub and TmpgEnc.

    Thanks muchly

  3. And since the video comes from the PVR-250 as MPEG a program would have to decode the MPEG, crop, then re-encode.

  4. That's why I'm looking for a program that crops on the fly while capturing.

Is WinTV that comes bundled with the card the best caping program for this card.

The Happauge PVR250 is so much better then the ATi TV Wonder especially in sharper picture, better quality, better colour. I love this card....

ATI MMC is the only software I've ever seen that does it. A shame really. More capture softwares ought to have it.

As I said earlier: the only way for software to crop while it captures is to decode the MPEG that comes from the card, crop, then re-encode. The PVR-250 hardware can only output MPEG regardless of what software you use:

analog video --> PVR 250 (MPEG out) --> capture software (decode/crop/encode) --> file.

In theory it might be possible to force the card to crop before sending the MPEG video to the computer (depending on the capabilities of the video capture chip and any firmware on the card) -- but I've never heard of any software or registry tricks that can do this.

Actually you probably wouldn't want to crop because that would make the video pretty much useless for anything but playback on the computer (for example MPEG for movie DVD's must be 480 or 240 lines tall). You would want to mask the area (ie, fill with black) instead. Again, I've never heard of any software or registry tricks to do this.

  8. VirtualDub has the ability to crop and add a black frame to the area cropped.

As can iuVCR as well as VirtualVCR.

But none of those will work with a hardware MPEG capture card/device ala the Hauppauge WinTV PRV-250

    P.S.
Actually iuVCR and VirtualVCR can crop but they can't pad at all. Only crop. Don't know about VirtualDub.
