I finally got a VBR that works for me and i am happy with it, but something isn't just right. Currently i am using 720x480. What's the best to use for playing on a stand alone DVD palyer on a TV?

Sorry, that just doesn't make much sense!

what 'VBR' works for you, and what 'isn't just right'. Details please!

BTW 720 * 480 is one valid DVD resolution. The others are here

Things that affect how a movie looks after authoring

    1. Bitrate
    2. Resolution
    3. Quality of source

If the source is crap, getting the rest right wont fix it. But you can certainly destroy a good source by poor encoding.

What is your source, your run time, your audio (LPCM, MP2, AC3), your VBR settings and your encoder ?

what i meant was, i got it where i can record 90-100 mins on a dvd and good quality. I think i may have figured it out, i am recording in Progressive and not Interlaced in the ATI program.

Going to record some today and see if it's better.

Also i am recording from Cable TV, and all channels are perfectly clear on my PC, my tv in my room and my Sony WEGA tv.

I use the ATI TV program to record, then edit with Womble, make DVD folder with TMPGEnc and burn with NERO. Other than a little something that just doesn't look quite right, everything is great. Even recorded a few Monster Jams and put them on DVD, look and sounds as good on our Sony as it does when it is playing from TV and not from a DVD.

My bitrate is, max 8mbit min 6.85 or so standard audio. (modified the DVD setting in ATI TV)

Res: until i see if changing from Progressive to Encode Interlaced helps, i am leaving it at 720x480.

Also should i record cropped or not?
