I think that "darker purple" thing is just a completely made up theory. As a matter of fact, if anything, I think I'd tend to side on the lighter purple being better quality. TY is light pinkish purple =)

Q1. The colour of the disc is circumstantial. A DVD player does not "see" the disc like you and I do, it doesn't care what colour the disc is since we're talking about a very specific wavelenght of reflected light here and not the full spectrum range that your eye is capable of seeing.
Q2. Nope, there is good and bad at all speeds. Plus the write strategy adopted by your hardware plays a big part here.
Q3. My best brand is determined by what will work with the most temperamental of my hardware, and unless you have the same my suggestion will be pretty worthless. Look in the media and players guides on the left and see which blanks work well with your hardware based on other user's experience to date. Remember that writing to a disc is only half the story - if it won't play back in your target device, burn speed and brand is irrelevant. -

Both can be had from either SVP or UkDvdr.
On Q2 hard to say as 8x havent really been around long enough to test reliabilty. Not bothered by small problems...

Be careful with Ritek the last 400 Ritek G04's I have bought have been total CRAP!!!
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question! -
I wish there were an easy way to answer this question
There should be a warning on all DVD packaging - WARNING! Your results may vary.
I've never tried TY but I won't deny they are a good disc. However, they also tend to be on the expensive side. They are very compatible with most burners on the market and you rarely get a bad burn.
However, I'm a fan of RICOHJPN +R, which always work for me, and my burner is on the picky side. The 4X discs are coming down in price (about $0.80 Cdn. each). They are sold under many brands, including Ritech, Imation and TDK.
8X discs are only better if you have an 8X or faster burner. If you have a 4X burner, using an 8X disc may not result in a better burn. In fact, faster discs often prefer a faster burn and won't work as well at lower speeds.
My only advise is to buy discs in small quantities first until you find one that works well. Test, test and test again. I have bought a few 50 disk spindles that have been a waste of money and time. I now buy 5 and 10 packs to see how they work for me.
