All dvd players & doby surround ?????

i thought it was just my dvd/surround sound system when i play a dvd with 5.1 or have a cable channel with sourround 5.1 the music part sounds great but when its time for the words to come through then its all muffled. Well comes to find out my mother has a sony 5 dvd changer and it does the same thing with sound.... the music/noise parts sound nice and clear but the words are real muffled. Is there a setting i can set on the dvd players or is it something else????

Maybe your center channel is dying???? Check all the cables to make sure nothing is loose.

(This weekend I found out my right rear speaker was really weak. I jiggled the wire and nothing changed. I swapped the left and right rears and bingo! It worked fine. It must have not been plugged in tight enough)

PS - also - movies like Star Wars and other THX movies have a sound test in available in the audio screen on the dvd menu. You can use it to test each individual speaker

EDIT - If it happens on two different surround systems there's a slight chance it might be a poorly encoded disc. (if you have a dvd drive rip it and use besweet to turn the vob into 6 wavs - play the center channel wav and see if its really low on the computer - you may have to reencode it if you have a dvd burner to output it too)

EDIT 2 - I forgot - most surround sound receivers have a volume adjuster for individual speakers. Check the manual for the menu control to increase the volume for the center speaker.

Does this happen for EVERY dvd or just one in particular?

What type of DVD player is it?

Does it have 5.1 analong output? (6 RCA jack outputs labelled: front left, front right, center, left surround, right surround, subwoofer)

Is there any settings in the menu under [AUDIO] or [SPEAKER] for Downmix? Set it to Stereo if there is. This downmixs the 5.1 source (center channel and all) into a stereo 'mix' that can then be outputted directly to a 2 speaker tv or to a surround receiver for Pro-Logic, Pro-Logic II or Pro-Logic IIx decoding for matrixed surround (whichever your receiver has, if you are using one). More importantly, you should hear the center channel dialog correctly.
I wish I could be of more help but I need more information.

Furthermore, if the answer to the second question above (5.1 analog) is 'yes' then make sure you have your white/red RCA patch cord connected to the DVD player's Left/Right output which should be seperate from the 5.1 analog outputs mentioned above.
Also in the Setup menu under [AUDIO] or [SPEAKER], if there is a 'Compression', 'Dynamic Range' or some other setting refering to Dynamic Range Compression, set it to OFF.
