I actually want to use the stuff for data backup (my company usually does 7 GB a Day in Changed Files, after zipping).

It'll be so much nicer to burn 1 business day on 1 DVD, but not at 7-9 bucks a pop.

Has anyone read anything about a price drop in the near future?

    Thanks

No, but over here in the UK, they're a third of the price they were when DL burners came out and for comparison, about double the price that +R media was two years ago.

I don't think we'll see DL media at +R prices for a few years yet, unless another format makes it redundant.

It is my understanding that pioneer has been developing Dual layer and it will be released shortly. From sources on the net including here! So it must be true

    Because

    1. HD DVD will not play in anyone's current DVD player
    2. HD DVD will be expensive at least for a while.
    3. +DL is not as compatable as it was promised.

If -DL delivers compatibility for current hardware its got a good chance of going on for a while. They've spent a lot more time developing it so hopefully its will deliver what +DL promised.

I'm not saying +DL is all bad I've tried a couple of backups and they work will on my DVD player but I wouldn't put any of my home vids on it and send it to friends as I know it doesn't work on a lot oth other players.

    Each to his/her own

good leads, but some sound pipe dreamish to the near future, maybe longer down the road, but as with all new tech is always a lag in it u know

would i buy a new writer for DL - format, no, and i doubt most people wold

  16. At the price of writers I would. Its not the investment it was when I bought my pioneer 104.

Most people didn't buy a new writer when + came out. You only buy if you want/need it (or you current drive dies).

But will people use it? Only if the media becomes cheaper is what most will say. Only if the compatability is good is what others will.

well i have 3 writers right now, and i only got the 16x DL one because it was cheap, and i knew i couldnt afford to spend 6-10 dollars a disc, i will stick to single layer for now

Hence the original post Most won't pay that amount for discs.

  19. tryed about 10 +DL burns now,3 with nero6,and the other 7 with dvddecrypter,ISO read,ISO write.-media used is traxdata2.4speed +DL. ritek dye.
the nero ones wont play in most of my and friends players, but the dvd decrypter ones work in all my players, even my old ps2-mind you,if i install the ps2 remote driver(that comes with the remote)-they wont play in it.cant understand that, but +DL IMO,should drop when the +DL x4 speed media is eventually released.

Rotten: That sounds like DVDDecryptor is bitsetting your media for you, but Nero is not. If you're using a slightly outdated version of Nero, it won't do it automatically. Try updating to the latest ver.

Who, with just a smattering of the Japanese language, translated the babelfish link lordsmurf provided?

I was late to DVD burning. With CompUSA asking 15 bucks per single DL disk, probably a while before I get into that.

    Cheers,

    George

(I'd follow Valenti's prior advice and just buy a backup.)

here in the uk blankdiskshop is the cheapest i have seen dual layer discs being sold, at £4.49 for 1 ridata dl disc in a jewel case and £5.49 for a verbatim dual layer disc in a jewel case. maybe about spring next year when they have come down to about £1.99 i will try some out. until then i am sticking with single layer, even though my burner is dual layer.
