  1. Wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what might be wrong with my drive. Let me just say that the drive reads writes and does everything perfectly except for one minor issue. When l put a disk (CD/DVD) into the drive, if l try to access it at all within about 10 seconds of putting it in then the computer totally freezes up and l have to reboot. If l let the drive go through its sequence of reading the disk (green light on, off, flashing etc) and then try to access the disk then it is fine. Sometimes the computer will just freeze up when l put a disk in without me doing anything.
Any ideas to try would be helpful. i dont know if it's a hardware or software issue but it didn't just start one day, l think it's always been like that. I'm running win2k with latest firmware 1.18 (i think).
    Cheers,

    Brent

  2. What type of media are you using?
Crappy media such as PRINCO can cause problems.

I have a similar issue. After putting in a disc the PC seems to freeze, but if you wait a moment its ok again.

Have you turned off the auto-insert notification rubbish for the drive? I think Windows is freezing while it tries to determine what disc has been put in the drive and offers the relevant programs that would access it.

  5. Thanks everyone for the quick response. I do use some crappy media sometimes but it also happens with better media. As for the auto insert notifications l will look into it as l dont know if it's switched on or off. Unlike yours mine freezes everything and never comes back online causing me to reboot everytime it does it. As for DMA, yes it is switched on.
    Thanks again.

  10. Forgive me if i'm wrong but on every cd drive that i've used if you try to access the disk when you first put it in, the computer will kind of hand for a few seconds as it's reading the disk and then it will come back online and everything will be normal. I don't think this is a problem and is totally normal. My problem was that it would never come back online, it would freeze for eternity causing me to reboot. Thankfully l believe the problem is now fixed.

    2) Enable/Disable "Auto Insert Notification" for all Devices:
    - First, you must logon as administrator.
    - Go to "Start" > "run" and enter "regedit" in the box. Click ok, then then click on the following sequence: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > Cdrom > Autorun.
    - Doubleclick on it, and set the desired value, "0" for disabled and "1" for enabled. The changes won't apply until you reboot.

I have been plagued by this problem for a year and a half and this just cured my problems. I wish I had tried a search earlier, I just learned to live with it - thanks alchemistresearch!
