    Hmm...

    Maxes out CPU usage for explorer.exe and refuses to start. I then have to kill explorer.exe and start it again through Task Manager so I can get my taskbar back.

    It never asked for registration (like I say - it wouldn't even start) and I didn't think about it at the time. I'll reboot and try again, though it's been fine with every other beta not needing a reboot.

    I'll get back tomorrow about this. My pooter is playing funny buggers as of late when I reboot and just won't show me the logon box - just a blank screen. I think it has something to do with Alcohol (the 120% one, not the beverage). I need it to be up and running for tonight but I'll try again tomorrow and post the results here.

    I think this issue may be for non XP SP2 users only. It is fixed now. Can you redownload and try again and let me know if this fixes the issue?

    Now when I'm installing the new version, msiexec.exe is maxing out the CPU after around ten minutes since first trying to install. I've killed the task with the error code 2755.

    So now I can't even begin to test it. I'm glad I filled out my Computer Details so you know what SP I'm using - I would have forgotten otherwise...

    This maybe suggests a problem on my end - but why with two different apps (SVCD2DVD and MSInstaller)? Besides the problem I've had the past couple of weeks with reboot issues, no other software has exhibited this behaviour. This is a strange issue.

    I have made another fix. Can you:

    1. uninstall b7 (if it is in the add/remove programs)
    2. If there is a SVCD2DVD in there without a custom icon - remove that too.
    3. If there is a file SVCD2DVD.sdb in \windows\AppPatch or \windows\AppPatch\Custom please delete that.
    4. Grab the new installer and try to install.

    2 dos boxes should appear at the end of the install. If you have further issues i will need to understand the order and behaviour of these - let me know.

    Also because the msiexec is spawning these to dos boxes/apps the issue you have may be that something is preventing that (Norton for example) - can you investigate that.

    I could be that the initial problem you had is now causing this new one....

  9. grabbed your new version now.
    Uninstalled beta 6.
    Run the beta 7 installation. I see the 2 dos boxes coming up very shortly.
    Nothing is written to it.
    Then i get the popup:
    There's a problem with this Windows instaler package. A pogram run as part of the setup didn't finish as expected.

    When i click ok, the installer rolls back everything.

    I have been unexpectedly busy and was unable to have another go with Beta 7 yesterday or today. I'm presuming you may be requiring a reboot during diags so that unfortunately rules me out at the moment with the reboot issues I've been having. I'm thinking that since it's only happened to me and one other (that have reported it here) it's probably just an isolated incident. I'm having thoughts that I should just Ghost my fresh OS image across and start again. This comp is not a 'production machine' so it gets all kinds of crap installed on it so maybe that's it. However, it's always regularly checked (spyware/antivirus), defragged, chkdsk, etc. (I'm an IT tech so I'm a pro 'fiddler'...)

    Hmm... Interesting situation here. I decided to give it another shot but by using Add/Remove Programs instead of Raxco DiskState which I normally use (it's much faster at startup). DiskState shows one SVCD2DVD (v1.5) in the list, which is why I'd never noticed the two entries, while Add/Remove Programs lists two. I'd uninstalled version 2, by the way. Both of the v1.5's have the correct icon.

    Checking the Uninstall section of the registry, I notice entry one:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\{05a75f67-7839-4e25-9df0-2c3226a9f1a3}.sdb]

    and entry two:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    I'm reluctant to delete anything since v1.5 works fine and I'd rather keep that and miss out on testing the beta because of this. I would investigate further but my girlfriend is demanding Playstation time from me, the harlot!

    ************** JIT Debugging **************
    To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
    application or machine (machine.config) must have the
    jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
    The application must also be compiled with debugging
    enabled.

    For example:

    <configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
    </configuration>

    When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
    will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
    rather than being handled by this dialog.

    Doh!

    Let me know if this occurs again!

    To recap: What happened was that the first release i was applying the compatability fix (the extra entry you saw in A/R programs) for all users where it should only be for XP SP2 users only. I fixed that but in your case the damage was done. Unistalling that "earlier" fix resolved it.

    Thanks for you patience in this.

    I still haven't found a decent reason to install SP2 yet and this is just reinforcing that belief - essentially forcing workarounds both by programmers and users.

    I didn't get to where I am by having no problems. Now that's one more chalked down in the 'solved' logbook. I wouldn't chance anything on a beta anyway if I didn't understand the implications of testing an unfinished product and it wasn't a devastating situation to begin with, so no problem.
