there are lots of software to choose from depending what you are going to do. are you asking what are the best dvd burning software? or what is the best software to back up dvds? take a look at the guides to the left. your question is too broad. need more info from you on what it is you'll be trying to accomplish with your new dvd burner.

I think for a beginner, DVD decrypter, and DVDShrink are a great way to start off. I've been burning for nearly 2 years now and still use them most of the time. Theres no investment in software since both are free. The only commercial apps I needed for DVD were AnyDVD (for region free and rip speed unlocking) and TMPGEnc DVD Author for making my own DVD's, but I don't think you need to worry about stuff like that right away, not if you're just making backups of your own movies. For normal data, anything like Nero or Alcohol 120% is alright.

If I'm shrinking, I use decrypter. Otherwise both CopyToDVD and Nero have been good to me.

  6. With TMPGEnc DVD author you can import VCDs and put them on DVD(make your own menus) without any reencoding and without any loss of quality.
TMPGEnc DVD Author Does burning and Authoring.

Nero is also a great program for just burning. Also see what comes with your DVD burner, it'll do the job just as good. Try all the free ones first, do a lot of reading, and then make your decisoin, or else you'd make a decision on someone elses opinion, and there is a lot of opinions.
