(Im in the UK - Region 2 for the record)
Just bought my 1st region 1 RCE dvd, it arrived this morning. I had the mutli region for a while, but have reset it back to region 2 bought another cheap player and re-set it region 1
The disc played perfect on my homemade region 1 player, so I took it round to try on the other 2 players in the house, my folks in the living room and my brothers both had long been made mutli region (by me)
But it still played on the living room player, but not on my brothers. The drawing of the world image came up, so how come they work on some muti-regions and not others???? is it do with the firmware?

DVD region settings are a joke, I can't believe how stupid people are falling for it

Multi Region = "0" setting. RCE will not play unless
the region matches. Regions range from 0 - 6 -
offline that sounds more like you are describing regular region protection, where you are locked out unless the region of the disk is the same as that of the player. RCE is supposed to prevent playback of the DVD, regardless of its region, on any player that has been hacked to be region free.
Jumbo_Holden, yeah I'd guess its a firmware issue. Perhaps some region free hacks specifically bypass RCE protection too? A typical region free player definitely should not be able to play an RCE protected DVD. -
Adam,
The majority of "region hacks" set the region ID to 0.
0 was designed as a "world" region. When it
was abused, RCE was the "solution" that failed
as true multi region players (you can select any region
from 0 to 6) can bypass this as well.
The confusion came about when the term "region free"
was confused with "multi region". 0 = region free
and multi region = selectable 0-6
or (in the old days) at least 2 selectable region settings. -
It is important to realise that RCE is fundamentally limited by the way Region Coding is implemented in players. Players that can be manually set to Region 1 will not have a problem with RCE discs. The major reason is because a major component of RCE revolves around "tricking" the mod to switching to a Region the disc doesn't normally work with.

interesting reading
I think RCE is a double headed beast. There are so many people who are beaten by the existing region setting issue, let alone RCE
"Life finds a way", they will never win. Us hardcore 'region all' people will always find a way round the problemDVD region settings are a joke, I can't believe how stupid people are falling for it -
Actually, you would be surprised how many people easily sidestep the Region problem. Michael D wrote that paper in about 2001 or so, and turned out to be very right when he said that RCE would back-fire. In the old days, region mods were very simple, and mostly either set the region to 1 or All, and both seemed to work equally well. But now, when Ma and Pa Kettle types with a player whose mod sets to All visit America and come home with a lot of DVDs, they find that the discs won't work as expected, and it gets very ugly in a hurry when they find out why. Then, they learn that when they make copies of DVDs, they can just strip out all those pesky Region Control things.
Of course, it never occurs to them to start along the path George Lucas has set, moving towards a "one world, one release date" scenario."It's getting to the point now when I'm with you, I no longer want to have something stuck in my eye..."
