  1. As some of you may know, Amazon.com had their holiday promotion, for 6 days there would be 3 items to vote for at a deep discount. Which ever one wins, would be the one offered for the specified day for the voted on price to a select number of randomly selected voters.

This year, round 4 was for video gear (500 people would get to purchase at the price), now you don't see actual vote totals, but they do show the percentages. The breakdown:

    WINNER 41%
Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player
    Amazon Price: $359.98
    Special Price: $149

    2nd Place 36%
    TiVo HD Digital Video Recorder
    Amazon Price: $263.54
    Special Price: $149

    3rd place 23%
    Samsung BD-P1400 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player
    Amazon Price: $339.99
    Special Price: $249

Now it's not a completly equal contest, the Blu ray would have been $100 more, but it was interesting to see HD win out by that much.

Ooops, forgot my disclaimer, I own neither HDDVD or Blu-ray at this time so I don't have an agenda towards either one.

As the Wall Street Journal pointed out on Friday, the Walmart sale of Toshiba HD-DVD player at $98 was a real success. At that price customers who were considering upconverting DVD players opt for HD-DVD.

If I needed another DVDplayer, I would have bought one too, inspite of the fact that there is nothing which has been issued on HD-DVD or Blueray (either) that I want to watch.

There is one player that is a winner but it isn't on the list. Here are the specs:

    - Price - ~$100
    - Play BlueRay - Yes
    - Play HD-DVD - Yes
    - Upconvert standard DVD - Yes

All four of these "spec" items must be there, not just two or three of the four.

With this player, the consumer doesn't have to be "right" with respect to the BlueRay / HDDVD war. He doesn't have to be concerned about what the fanboys or corporate PR departments have to say. The consumer wants to be able to buy what he wants to play. (Note the period)

Within 15 days this website reports contradictive results and they never report actual sales figures.
I don't believe any "news" from either camp and I'm tired of the propaganda.
