  2. I've heard people rave about this Aopen 1648 DVD-ROM - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-552&depa=0 It is supposed to be very fast at ripping.

I have 5 different DVD-ROMs and 4 different burners, and I usually use my LiteOn 163 DVD-ROM to rip with - it is pretty fast at ripping, and does a solid job of reading discs. But my best drive for reading damaged or poorly burned discs is my Toshiba 5112 burner. It rips at about half the speed of my LiteOn and is not a very good burner, but it has recovered several discs that none of my several other drives could recover. I got it for free after rebate , sold at Office Max as a 'Mad Dog 6-in-1'.

    Liteon SOHD 167T - firmware-flashed.

On special occasions, some already-burnt DVDs have reached 15.2X with DVDDecrypter
    If in doubt, Google it.

I just ripped a brand new, single layer pressed disc with DVD Decrypter, and my Toshiba 5112 topped out at 5.9x. The bad thing is, it slows down to 1.5x around 70% ripped, then speeds back up to 5x at about 80%, and I've seen this before with other discs with this drive. I have no idea why. But, as I said before, it reads bad discs better than any of my other drives.

i love my toshiba's (3)1612, (1)1712 they are fast rippers with using the hacked firmware to unlock read speeds.

  9. Is yor drive rip locked ? If so then just hack it with one of those fancy hacked firmwares. I thought the nec 3500 was one of the best drive once hacked. Did you check on cdfreaks forum about your drive & hacks for it ?

nec 3500 drive is known not to be a good reader. liteon & the older toshiba dvdroms are good readers.

Lite On - cheap and good
Toshiba - a little more money, faster, higher quality, needs a hacked firmware for best ripping speeds.

    I have a lite-on 167-T (30$ now) with official f/w
Rip anything pretty good and pretty fast.
To be honest, I am almost afraid to rip a SL DVD. It takes 5 minutes and I feel the dvd will explode (up to 14-16x).
    Very good reader as well.
One of the best 30$ I've spent on computer stuff.

  14. I'd have to suggest Lite-on 163 / 5's as well.

I replaced an old drive that had a few problems reading my own DVD-R's back some time ago, and have never had any problems with it. At the price they're going for at the moment, I'd say you could do a lot worse than a Lite-on and they're easy to get hacked firmware for if that floats yor boat. Out of choice now, I specify Lite-on.

    Lite On 166S

Beleive it or not, i have actaully acheived a 16X max rip on a single layer commercial dvd (though it was at the very end of the rip for only a few seconds).

  17. I stumbled across this website the other day. are the speeds listed for just normal reading or will they be the same for ripping too?

    Thanks.

  19. I just bought a Lite-On DVD-16X3H (firmware GHGA) and a Pioneer DVR-108 (firmware 1.14) and both do NOT rip DVD+Rs at all. They rip DVD-R ONLY. What's going on? Are they damaged? Do I need a new firmware?
Are they made to rip DVD-R only and not DVD+R?

DVDInfo says that the Pioneer DVR-108 reads DVD+R. The Lite-On DVD16X3H should not read DVD+R. I wonder if there is a firmware that enables it to read DVD+R.

    Thanks for your info.

  20. Pioneer108 Won't Rip DVD+R? I haven't had any problems ripping DVD+R's at all.

  21. What firmware does yours have? Mine has the 1.14
    Mine keeps retrying.

  22. I have Nil's firmware 1.14 with 12x rip,

I have 2 other questions for you?

What kind of DVD+R media are you tryin to rip?

    An off topic question...

Are you Wetseal's Son? Wetseal is a guy on the internet.. your screename looks familiar, I realize there are many "judgementDay"s on the internet. I'm just wondering if your Wetseal's son. Probably not.

  23. Not, I'm a different judgmentday.
The media is 8X Ritek. It was burnt with a Sony DW-D18A.
I went to the Pioneer site and it seems like they have the same 1.14 also.

  24. Sorry, both drives read DVD+R media just fine. The DVD+R that I was trying to read was bad. Thank you for your help.
