Hoping someone can offer some advice on what is probably a really simple question. I've just started doing DVD>Xvid conversions using simpledivx to store on my xbox and watch through XBMC on my TV and am wondering whether i should be de-interlacing my pal interlaced dvd's or leaving them as is ? Anyone any suggestions ?

    Cheers

Basic rule because I don't know how XBOX creates an interlace output.

If both fields originate from the same time sample, deinterlace could work assuming you get the correct field order.

If XBOX outputs fields 1/50 sec apart in time, keep it interlace. Deinterlace will create blur and double vision.

If both fields are from the same time sample the video is not interlaced, it's progressive. There would be no need to deinterlace and field order would not matter.

The XBox outputs an interlaced not progressive signal.

If the interlaced signal is read out of a progressive frame buffer, then the fields were sampled at the same time but read out 1/60 or 1/50 sec apart. In that case they could be weaved back into a frame with no motion artifacts.

If the interlaced signal is read out of a field buffer, then the samples may be separated by 1/60 or 1/50 sec.

Reordering odd and even fields would cause problems in either case.

The real issue is whether or not you can find a player that outputs interlaced Xvid properly (whether you're using the SD or HD outputs) for your setup. I don't know of any.

The general rule is to avoid deinterlacing if at all possible.
