I was juz wondering what tool i could use to convert my avi file (approx 780mb) to dvd mpeg.
I've dealt with other file formats, but rarely with avi. I was wondering what about TMPGEnc, D.I.K.O? i used tmpgenc reguarly but i am juz wondering what would be the best way.
One thing, usually don't the mpeg files have to be 1gig or less, i heard that if not, standalone players may not be able to read them.. I'm thinking this is true, cos all my commerical dvd, the vob files never exceed 1gig..
thanks alot

OK, a little confusion here, but we should be able to sort things out.
First, tmpgenc would be a good choice. I would use 2-pass VBR to get the best quality. Use the bitrate calculator ( https://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm ) to work out the settings.
I am assuming the avi is DivX or Xvid. If it has an mp3 audio track, you may find tmpgenc chokes if it is VBR. Use VirtualDub to extract the mp3 and save it as an uncompressed .wav. This can then be used as an audio source for tmpgenc.
Don't confuse vobs with mpegs. vobs are created during the authoring process, and may contain more than one mpeg clip, or may only contain part of a larger mpeg clip.
I also assume you have an authoring program to compile your mpegs from tmpgenc into a DVD compliant format ?Read my blog here.

This guide might be of some use, not to mention the guides under convert to DVD MPEG2 in the guides section.
If in doubt, Google it. -

I have been learning how to do this myself (and I find this site to be invaluable).
I've tried several freeware and trialware programs listed on this site. So far I really like VSO DivxtoDVD and Tempgenc.
Tempgenc allows for editing of video, and has encoded some good MPEG1/SVCD files to my harddrive (all my purchased software has had problems with audion synching). DivxtoDVD also dia good job, not having problems with synch, but saves as VOBs and I just don't know enough yet to burn these with all the features I want.
I may just have to buy Tempgenc I like it so much. (27 more days to decide) -
Yeah, i've tried vso's divxtodvd with a short avi clip, it's fast compared to other programs, but the quality produced is fairly average and not that great...
