I tried DVD Santa and found the result (going from a .avi to DVD) to be choppy. Any ideas why?

I then took the same .avi and made a DVD with Ulead DVD Factory 2 and it came out fine - so I'm thinking something's wrong with the program or there a codec issue. Not so many advanced features to futz with...

The issue is probably exactly that - you have very little control over the outcome. Almost all "one-click wonders" suffer from this.

Out of curiosity, what were the settings before and after ? Format conversion (PAL <-> NTSC), if poorly done, can produce this type of choppiness.

DVD Santa (and it's ilk) are for people who don't have the time or want to learn proper techniques, and who aren't concerned too much about the quality of the outcome. They have a place, but you need to lower your expectations accordingly if you choose to use them.

I was going from .avi to mpeg2 (DVD) I used the default settings in the advanced settings - didn't quite get the other choices. Not the usual vbr type stuff.

Anyone else experience this w/DVD Santa?

You'd think s simple tool like this would convert .avis to mpeg2 seemlessly...

I'd expect it to do it seemlessly in a small number of cases, where the codecs, resolutions and datarates etc all happen to line up. Outside of that, I'd expect just the sort of results your are getting. Simple tools generally work only in simple situations. If you have spent much time working with video on a PC, you'd know that simple is one of the last words you'd use to describe it.

My other programs seem to work alright consistently when making DVDs - Nero. Ulead.....

The few times I used nero (aside from Recode), I got very mixed results, and generally poor to average quality. I haven't yet found an easy, one-click solution that can produce consistent results, let alone consistently good ones.

If you really believe you have a beef with this program, contact their support people and see what they say.

I don't care so much - just trying it. Was just curious why it produces choppy DVDs. Should be called DVD Satan.

  9. Was any other program running at the time?
Usually that is the real problem, something operating in the background.
The conversions I have done so far, maybe twenty, have all been fine.
But I run DVDSANTA alone with nothing else running.

I'll give it another spin for kicks and check what's running. Thing is, in the same conditions, Ulead and others seem to do just fine - but I'll try again and report back

DVD Satan has kind of a ring to it......
