Canada Ends Permit Program for Foreign Strippers
    Email this Story

    Dec 2, 8:49 AM (ET)

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Canadian government, under fire because one of its ministers has been accused of giving preferential treatment to a Romanian stripper, said on Wednesday it was scrapping a program that handed out temporary work permits to foreign-born exotic dancers.

Human Resources Minister Joe Volpe said it was clear that not all Canadians supported the program, which granted permits to around 660 foreign strippers to work in Canada last year.

"I didn't feel in the slightest bit comfortable with the program and I didn't think there was any justification for it," he told reporters.

Immigration Minister Judy Sgro is facing daily calls to resign over her decision to grant a temporary residency permit to Alina Balaican, a Romanian stripper who had worked on Sgro's election campaign earlier this year. She also extended Balaican's expired work permit.

Sgro denies she has done anything wrong, saying she acted on humanitarian grounds.

But opposition legislators complain that the speed with which Sgro helped Balaican contrasts with the long wait facing other applicants for temporary residency. Canada's ethics commissioner has already been asked to examine the case.

well their are enough Qu. french ones here - but in the past American strippers could come and go here easier than any other profession ...

First, you can't masterbate in your own house, now they don't want any more strippers. Canadians are coming across as being rather prudish lately..

They're not really 'EXOTIC' dancers if they're native. They're just strippers.

I think I like the thought of something exotic alot better than indigenous. Imagine if instead of advertising you had exotic dancers, you had indigenous dancers. I don't think you would be in business very long. I just keep getting a mental image of a Strip Club in Anchorage, Alaska. "Indigenous Dancers, No Cover, All Nude" Do you think Eskimo women actually strip. Maybe there's a website for it.

For some reason I always consider Canadian provinces more live states than countries, maybe it's just me. If they're countries, what does that make Canada?

If it's naked (or semi-naked) women, there's a site SOMEWHERE for it. Pr0n is the biggest industry on the net by a wide margin. If I'm wrong and there isn't, I suggest you take advantage and corner the market now. :P

Québec is different from the rest of Canada (besides the majority speaking french there) , different laws (even type of law) , they handle taxes different, have different language laws.... and about 1/2 the people there want to separate from Canada .. in Canada we call them a separate country as a joke - but we consider them 100% part of Canada ..

the prov. and territories of Canada are not quite like states ... though there is some correlation ..

before i moved to Canada - i knew nothing what so ever about it .. pretty sad really, considering i lived right next to it ..

    Hello,

Bj_m - Quebec isn't too unlike Lousiana in the US in respect to different laws.

Louisana has runoff elections when it's close.

They also have a bunch of French based local laws don't they?????

Napoleonic Code (Civil) law is used in Quebec and Louisana - all other states and the rest of canada use British Common Law

    Hello,

I don't know about that but the west side of Canada is all COWBOY stuff.

Like the Calgary Stampede. I've even seen their stampede parade on cbc channel 9 (windsor - gets over to the detroit metro area ).
