I ask this becuase just last year I about myself the plextor 708A and its GENIUS!1! And now I'm kinda feeling behind the times because now I don't have one... and really they aren't that much anyways so would it be worth it to burn dvd9 on bigger movies and dvd5 on smaller movies that are 1:1 with my current settings? Do you have to buy new media as well cuz I also just purchased 100blank taiyo yuden and cases?? or can you burn dual layer on those disks...

and assuming, pioneer is probably the best name to go with so far for dual layer?

    thanks ppl

  2. Well you cant burn d/l on a std dvd-r disk.....
Unless you really need to upgrade your writer now then dont bother. D/l disk as too expensive at the moment to make it a worthwile venture to back up films onto them.
Had my pioneer 108 for about 3 months now and still aint burnt or bought a d/l disk....
    Not bothered by small problems...

While I can't/don't speak for everyone here, I think the general consensus here would be "it will be .... it probably isn't quite there yet ...". I say that because there have been numerous threads where people have suffered problems, be it a problem of the technology, or from the user's behalf. No-one can really say for sure which players can play DL media (some think all should, but until a lot of players are tested, no-one can confirm or deny). Then there's the issue of absorbitant pricing of media ATM. As I've said in one of the other threads, I believe that once - DL media and burners become available, the media is going to drop significantly due to competition pressures.

Do a forum search and you'll find plenty about this topic.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Single layer is so reliable now and the media is so cheap, I don't see a compelling reason to switch yet. Of course my writer is a Pioneer 107D and it'll almost burn coffee can lids ....it's that good So I'd have to have a real good reason to let it go

  7. I read that DL media costs $1USD wholesale and the stores sell them for $5-10,I'm going to wait until the media is <$2.

Nice profit margin! Where did you read that?

  9. I can't find the article but it was about a month ago,it said that it was only $.40 more than a DVD-5.
Granted the price was OEM wholesale to distributors...so the price a B&M store buys them at is higher.

My Pioneer 106D has burnt tupperware lids in a pinch. All be it, I did have a few bad blocks past 4.1gb.

I would still like to burn at 8x or 12x but to me it's just not worth the upgrade yet.

Yeah? Well, my NEC-1300 burns bagels at 4x! :P Sometimes a little too burnt. It only burns plain ones though. It tends to choke on raisin and poppy seed.
