I have a Ricoh 5125 DVD +R/+RW recorder with the latest firmware 1.72.
I use IMGTool and DVD Decrypter and Bit Setter to set the bit to DVD-ROM. I have 2 stand alone DVD players. A Panasonic and an Apex.

My problem is that some DVD's I burn will play on both, some will play on just the Panasonic, some will play on just the Apex and some will not play on either. This is consistent even when I try to make an additional copy, so I do not believe it is the media.

Does this have something to do with how it was authored? Is there some software to run the VOB or ISO files through to standardize them? I just don't know enough about this to understand why this is happening.

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hello,

Check your model number for +R compatiblity. +R should be just as compatible as -R but some players may not like it. Read the reviews here:

The more I read and think about your post, the more I'm leaning towards that IMO it is most likely your media. Why you may ask ? Think about it. You've converted and authored your source, then used IMGtools to create an image. You burn this image to disc 1. Let's just say that it plays fine on both players. You insert disc 2 and burn another copy of the image - only plays on one player. What did you change ? Not the image file, no, you changed the disc. It is not uncommon to get vast variances in the quality of media even within the same spindle. It is not very common the better media you use, but it is certainly more likely IMO than anything else. The only other possible thing is that maybe your burner is throwing out dud burns. The encoding/authoring process is solid because you are getting different levels of playability, yet you have only encoded/authored once. That leaves us with burning or media.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Agree that it's probably your media. What are you using? I was a hapless victim of Memorex ONCE (3 out of 10 DVD's turned out faulty in some way), but never again. I have been using TDK's purchased at COSTCO with 100% success so far (out of 23 burned DVD's).

I have been using Memorex, but I recently purchased some Sonys that were on special, but haven't used them yet.

I probably didn't word it clearly, but what led me to believe it wasn't the media is that if I try to make additional copies of a DVD they still do the same thing. In other words, if Disc A only plays in the Panasonic and I make 1 or more additional Disc A's they all play only in the Panasonic. If I have another Disc B that plays only in the Apex and I make additional copies, they all still only play in the Apex. I have never had 1 disc play in one machine and not the other and have a copy not do the same thing. That is what is so strange. I would think if it were the media that sometmes 1 disc that only played in 1 machine would have a copy do the opposite. The ones that play in neither, if I try to make additional copies, the copies all still play in neither.

For CDRs I have always used Taiyo Yuden. I have never had a bad burn in probably 900 Taiyo Yuden CDRs. What is a good recomendation for DVD+R media?

Is Bit Setter set to DVD-ROM always a good way to go?

    Thanks!!

I've experienced this same thing with my old Lite-on 411 burner.
Wasn't sure if it was media or the burner.
I believe that funny things happen when it comes to a particular
    media vs a particular burner.
It's not black and white, but the combination of the two can produce
different results not seen in either, and inconsistantly I might add.

When I changed to my NEC 3500, media that was sometimes playable
in a certain standalone, is now 100 percent compatible. Go figure.

So ..., it may be the media, but just as easily
can be the burner, or a weird combination of the two.
Seems that over time, these compatibility issues are
getting to be less of a factor, speaking as someone who
has been thru 7 different burners.
And currently the NEC is my fav.

    good luck
