    anyone seen this on ebay?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5732733835

Looks like a good deal, but is it too good? Brand new? You think? I already bought one from him (he was selling two), so we'll see when (if) it gets here.

It came, but it has definitely been opened. And the batteries for the remote are dead. Do batteries go dead after awhile even if not used? It seems to be "like new", but I can't tell if it's "brand new".

Now to compare it with the 9911.

I'd contact the seller and let him know the condition the vcr came in and I would leave either neutral or negative feedback.

The 9800 is several years old, so the batteries that came with it would be dead by now... even if you got hold of a "new old stock" unit. Just because the box was opened doesn't necessarily mean that the unit was ever purchased at retail and put into service.

Opened doesn't mean used. I routinely used to open stuff myself, when I sold on eBay. I wanted to 100% verifiy the contents were REALLY in the box, and often, I'd plug them in, just to be sure it would not be DOA. However, I typically mentioned this in the descriptions.

Most things I buy have batteries that are dead or don't last long. Go to the dollar store and grab a 10-pack for like $2.

My "new old stock" 9800 remote batteries were still good when I got mine a few months ago.

hmmm... I talked to the buyer of the 2nd unit the seller had, and he said his batteries were still in the cellophane wrapper and work fine. Mine came with the wrapper broken and one battery still in it, sort of like someone tried to stuff them both back in, and one came out during shipping or something. The unit seems fine so far, I'm not complaining. The cost of the batteries is not something I care about.

I am interested in the comparrison to the 9911.

I looked at the deck while it was still for sale. I was bidding on a panasonic AG 1970P and didn't want to end up with two decks. I don't have space for one right now.

I think you got a good deal.
