Please forgive me if this is a FAQ. Things have probably changed in the last few months, so the guides I read are likely not up-to-date.

I want to backup my DVD to a MPEG2 with maximum quality and subtitles (great if the subtitles are optionally removble!). The MPEG2 file will be ultiimately streamed from my computer to the Prismiq media player

I started off by ripping the DVD using DVD Decrypter's IFO mode. Got the 4 vobs corresponding to the main feature.

Used DVD2AVI to create a D2V video file and WAV audio file

Used TMPGEnc to encode using the DVD (NTSC) template and Automatic VBR.

Checked the resulting MPG file with AVICodec and it tells me that it has no audio stream! Why is this?

Also, how can I put subtitles on the mpeg?

    Thanks for any help

  2. So if you play the mpeg you get no sound?
Did you test the .wav file made from DVD2AVI ?
Did you select the .WAV as the audio source
and the .dv2 as the video in tmpgenc? or
did you frameserve? If so what was your method?

Yes, if I play the mpeg I get no sound. Yes, I did test the .wav from dvd2avi, it sounds fine.

Yes, I did select the .d2v as the video source and the .wav in tmpgenc? (I thought this was referred to as frameserving? If not, what is frameserving]

    Help? Thanks

  4. Sorry, I meant double frameserving. It speeds up encoding.

You install the latest version of avisynth.
You then write a TXT file in notepad like
    this.

    LoadPlugin("C:\Avisynth\plugins\MPEG2Dec\mpeg2dec. dll")
    mpeg2source("C:\Movie\mydvd2avimovie.D2V")

and save as .AVS rather than .TXT

Now load video source as filename.AVS in
tmpgenc and you will be amazed at the
    decrease in encoding time.

    But what about audio source?

OK I will try that, but do you have any idea why I am not getting any audio in my mpeg with the way I am doing it?

Strangely, AVICodec shows the audio codec in the top pane but on the bottom, it has no AUDIO line!

    Help? Thanks

OK I got the audio now, even though AVICodec says it has no audio stream.

Anyway, how can I get my subtitles on the mpeg?

    Thanks

I did more research and am surprised that there is no guide out there that does what I need.

I just want to get the highest quality MPEG2 from my DVD and with subtitles.

Can someone please point me on how to go about doing this?

I read Sefy's guides but they seem a little dated.

Yes, DVDx does what I want, but I am having a little trouble with it. It insists that my source is 24fps when it really is 29.97 fps. Also, for some reason, why I play the MPEG2 on my Prismiq Media Player, it refuses to FF and REW

I can get to the IFO, VOB part using DVD Decrypter, but I am having difficulty doing the encoding part and adding subtitles.

    Thanks for any help
