  1. I first transfered from my DV camera via FireWire. The pictures quality looked okay, good at best. Now that I have a ATI 9800 Pro I am wondering if I should capture the video again via the ATI card in hopes that it will improve my video quality.

Transfer via firewire is an exact bit for bit copy of the digital data on the DV tape.

Capture via an analog capture card would require the conversion from digital to analog by the camera, then analog to digital by the capture card. This will NOT look better than the original.

  3. bugster, thanks for the infomration.

Is there a software package that would clean the video up once it is captured? Clear it up bit?

The quality may lessen when doing that. As bugster stated, when transferring via firewire you are getting an exact copy of the data on the DV tape.

You could probably use some filters in TMPGEnc to help clean it up. If you can, post a screen cap of the actual video so that we can get an idea of what you may need to do.

If the video is still in DV format, look into Virtualdub. Lots of filters available. You can frameserve the output directly into your encoder and avoid the inbetween files.
