I want to buy a external DVD writer for my laptop. But my laptop is PIII 1.2GHz, is it ok to write files/movies to dvd media? Someone says the system must be above 1.6GHz.
Please advice

You are good to go. Is it fire wire, USB? I really wouldnt see any problems.I have done it many times with a P650 128 of ram with a USB model.. Have fun...

It will probably take you longer to compress the dvd movies to fit on a single layer dvd media because of the slower CPU speed. I would suggest a firewire than USB. USB tends to have compatibility issues compared to FIREWIRE. Also remember if your USB is only 1.1 the ripping of the dvd files and burning process will take longer compared to USB 2.0. In my opinion I would connect the external dvd burner via FIREWIRE. Get a combo FIREWIRE/USB card that way you could try out both.I want to buy a external DVD writer for my laptop. Thank you. I will go ahead. I bought USB2.0 PCMCIA card already, but it seems somehow problem with my 10/100M Ethernet PCMCIA card.
I have NEC Laptop and I use 3com 10/100M ethernet PC card to connect to network. Now When I inserted USB 2 Card, the windows froze in a few seconds. The system performed well if only one card in the slot(either ethernet card or USB2 CARD). If I put both card in the slots, then I boot up the laptop, the windows is still working but the local area network status shows "disabled" or "network cable was removed". I am not able to enable the connection. It seems some conflicts between two cards. They shared IRQ11, and device manager says "no conflict" and "The card is working well". I cannot change the IRQ because it is greyed.
Not a big problem because I can use the card separately, but anyway, it would be nice to fix that. -
