  1. Hi

I have an .avi I have encoded to dvd using 3 different encoding programs (don't laugh ... WinAvi, DvdSanta and D.I.K.O.).

When it is burnt (using Nero) to DVD and put in my standalone dvd player (which plays anything), teh picture is "rolling" ... ie. there are 4 "sections" of the film on the tv screen, all sort of rolling/flickering .....

    The .avi is ....

    23.976 fps ..... 576 x 312 (16:9), DX50
    48000 hz, 128 kbps, MPEG layer-3

I have taken this as being NTSC.

Should I attempt to change the 576 x 312 to something else?

I cant get TMPGenc to work any more. Are there any other programs I can use to try to sort this out?

    Any help gratefully received ....

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Sounds like it's a pal/ntsc issue.

  3. I thought that, but I have always thought that 23.976 fps is NTSC, not PAL. I'm encoding it as NTSC. PAL is 25 fps isn't it?

Will it make it worse if I try to encode it as PAL?

  6. I thought pal was 25fps and NTSC was 30fps ???

  7. That's what I thought!

NTSC can be 29.97, but I think it can also be 23.976, but maybe I have to change the 23.976 to 29.97 to make it stop rolling on the screen!

    Hellllllllllp

23.976 is NTSC Film framerate. Your dvd player may be having problems if you did not encode the file with 3:2 pulldown which would tell the player to play back the file as 29.97. If thats the case you might look into pulldown.exe

  9. Ok, so if I can specify NTSC and 29.97 fps, it "may" be better?

I'll look into that & report back - thank you guys.

  10. well there's another coaster

that's 4 programs Ive used so far & none of them have come up with anything watchable ......

I specified NTSC, 720x480 and 29.97fps ......... guess what? More rolling on standalone dvd player .... yet the disc plays fine on pc .....

Anything else I'm missing? Apart from my sanity of course lol

You might want to invest in a dvd-rw disc to cut down on coasters. I have never used the software you have tried . I am most familiar with tmpgencplus and am learning cce sp . In my experience to get the best results it is always best to keep the framerates the same so if the framerate is 23.976 then encode at 23.976 set to play back internally at 29.97 with 3:2 pulldown. I don't know how you would set that up in the software you are using. Sorry I couldn't offer any more help.

  12. lol ok

so will i be able to do the "play internally @ 29.97" in tmpgenc?

does it make a difference that I am making an NTSC dvd on a dvd+r I bought in this country? or is that irrelevant as long as i get all the fps/aspect ratio etc etc correct?

I just dont understand why the discs I burn play fine on my computer, but won't play properly on the standalone dvd player (which usually plays anything I throw at it) ....

Just open the encoding settings and where it says encode interlaced change that to 3:2 pulldown. then when you choose your framerate it will say 23.976 play back internally 29.97 .
