  1. This seemed like the right forum for my question. I DLed dr divx from divx.com I really like the app. However, it wants to query their servers each time it loads. If I say no it still loads but functionality is lower, with no accompanying message. Does anybody know exactly what it's asking them about?

BONUS question: If I stop using this app and go with one of the freeware ones, will they encode just as well? On the divx site it says that dr divx/divx pro get "30% better encoding than the divx codec". Does this imply that they have access to a version of the codec that normal freeware apps do not?

    Thanks!

It's phoning home..... Could be anything, probably the only ones that would truly know would be the people there. I know one thing, if I purchased any software and it had limited functionality because I denied it access to the internet I would start bitching.

This, Half-life2, I think it's gonna be the new thing Thing is it doesn't tell you it has limited functionality - but if I use zone alarm to say no-no to it, it loads and it just doesn't quite do the same things.

Contact them and ask them... if they tell you you have to allow access bitch. I would. Might want to look in your options, could be that you have it set to look for updates or something along those lines.

Many of the apps I install try and phone home including my editor. The editor only tried to access once though and never asked again.

  5. Freeware applications such as AutoGK are comparable to Dr. DivX in ease-of-use and will encode just as well. More powerful applications such as Gordian Knot will allow for more control and therefore slightly better encodes.

Cool! I will get those a go. I see so many darn options in the how-to that I thought I'd make it easy on myself and go straight to the source. I figured that Divx.com would have a great encoder. I do like it too, but I'm seriously just not paying for something that I can do for free, even if I need to play with a new utility.

I just tried setting back sys clock to see what happens with drdivx upon loading. It still knows when I installed it, because it's going to their server and it has the info clearly stored there. I'd _guess_ that the full version doesn't hit their servers each time, but no clue.
