After years of successful captures using my ATI TV WONDER VE on my WIN98SE machine using VIRTUALDUB I am suddenly getting a "device already in use" error when I try to capture.

I have tried other capturing programs and get the same error. I have uninstalled all recent software related to video processing and still get the error. Only new hardware is a DVD writer.

Any help I can get on this would be appreciated.

If that doesn't work got to the ATI site and download the newest drivers and MMC if your using it. There should be a utilities link on the driver page, find the uninstall utility. This will uninstall all ATI related programs on your computer. Run it then follow the directions for reinstalling your card and MMC.

Edit: I did a little digging around, you can get this error if you have another device such as a webcam..... Try hitting ctrl+alt+del, look and see what's running that is video related. You can find out what you have running here. http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

I tried rebooting and I looked at all running services and processes. I went so far as to uninstall any and all software that relates to video processing or editing since I assumed that some aggressive software package might have changed some setting or other.

I suspect a VFW-WDM wrapping problem. In another post (during my exhaustive searches) I noticed that everyone else seems to have vfwwdm32.dll as their wrapper and I do not have that. I am running vfwwmd.drv ... no mention in my registry of msvideo32 ... just plain old msvideo. I figure this might be a win98 issue but IF that's what I've been running all along then why did it work 4 months ago and not now? If some program changed it, why wouldn't that program work?

    Frustrating....
