These are some pictures I took of a place called South Point, on the island of Hawaii. I live on Oahu, so I don't actually live where the pictures were taken, but it's the same state. So this is kind of like that beautiful pictures post, but these should be of someplace in your home state, or state that you consider home, (for those of you who have moved).

The old post office on the sqare in town, not used as a post office any longer obviously. Its now where you can go pay your powerbill

No broadband bills, since there is no broadband.

An overhead shot of my shitty town.

Its like you can smell the lack of broadband from space!

Here is some silly church they built.

I think we have a church for ever 2 people... but no broadband.

Last here is my highschool, I live about 2 blocks from it.

They dont have broadband either, or any good computer classes when I was there.

This one is where I went to high school, in Park Ridge, Illinois. When I went there it had 4,400 students. I was in the Class of 1972:

I used to live there last year, but now I live off-campus. I'll probably post a picture of my new house tomorrow, when it is light enough for a photo.

If you look at the second photo, I used to live in one of the houses at the very top-right.

I always wonder, when driving thru French villages, where all of the people work. Most people farm but not large enough for apparent support/salary. The villages just dont have enough businesses to support the amount of houses??????????????

Hey Craig - What's the cost of a building a brick house, opposed to one made with 2X4's and drywall? I don't think I've ever seen a brick house in Hawaii. I'm sure there must be a few around, but they're not common. Do they retain heat/cold better than double walled homes, or is it a decorative thing?

Brick houses with tiled roofs are the norm here, a timber framed house would be extremely rare. Dont know about build costs but we just paid £200,000 for our house in a currently bouyant market. You obviously have to take into account the cost of the land and any profit or other costs involved in the build. For insurance purposes our rebuild cost is estimated at £120,000.
The walls are twin skinned, the outer being brick and the inner thermalite block with a cavity between the 2. I am guessing that they would be better thermally insulated than a timber framed building.

Same old Maine East :P Did you know Harrison Ford went there ...class of '61 or something? And Hillary went to Maine South

When I started there in '68 they had a dress code (no patent leather shoes because the boys can look up their skirts, no culottes for the girls - they had to wear skirts always ...this one I agreed with , no hair over the ears on boys, dress shirts tucked in, no jeans, no t-shirts). By the time I left in '72 students were smoking pot on the lawn, shorts and tees were OK Big changes there in 4 years.

You remember that big seal inlaid in the floor of the rotunda? When I started there, if anyone was caught stepping on the seal, they had to scrub it on their hands and knees with a toothbrush.
