I'm thinking of getting a dual layer external dvd writer and want to know will any normal 4.7GB disc burn in dual layer or do you need special discs? Thanks.

You need special discs, the so called dvd+r dl or dvd+r9.

Hello,
EDIT -
Yeah you need the DL 8.5 gb discs to get the higher capacity

Baldrick and yoda are correct. But, depending on exactly what your asking, if you don't have any DL discs then any regular -/+R discs should burn in your burner at the lower capacity. Just check the specs.
Just wanted to make that clear just in case, though you probably already new that! -
