Can make video cds but not DVD-RAM OR DVD-R

I have successfully burnt video cds from files I have downloaded using TMPG enc plus Nero 6. Unfortunately it does not work the same when trying to burn to a dvd-ram or dvd-r. My Dvd player is a Toshiba xs32 which is compatable with both makes but it will only playback a video in CD format. I have checked that the correct procedure is being used in TMPG when burning for DVD and it plays back on the PC ok but not the standalone DVD.

Any ideas please what I might be doing wrong please?

Both are using DVD-VR, and your player probably cannot read DVD-VR. Few can.

Thanks but as a newbie could you explain what this means? Im not sure the instructions in the TMPG or Nero/Toshiba guides make mention of this.

Is there anyway round it other than using the cd route?

VCD = VideoCD
DVD from store = DVD-Video
DVD from your recorder = DVD-VR

Different formats.
