Would I be able to hook up an LD player somehow to a 9800xt, to capture? Or do i need an AIW card. Also can you link me to a set top player that can do that?

What movies do you have? So many DVD are availabe at very cheap price $5 - $10. It is hard to adjust your trouble and effort.
LD player: $100,
DVD burner: $70,
Video capture card: $80,
DVD media: $40.
You can do your own math. Beside, the quality may not be as good as you want it to be.
There are professional LD payers can read data, it is hard to get one and very expensive. -
then again, it might not be that bad.
I picked up a Pioneer LD for $35 (including shipping) from eBay, works fine. My cap card can be found if you scrounge for as low as $10-15.
although genki has a point - if it's out on dvd, it's a lot less hassle to buy it. but if you're like me, and dropped the ball on getting things while they were in print, the LD can be a lot cheaper... I'm looking at my shelf at the LD of Parents, cost me $3.50 at my local used-book store. The sealed copies of the DVD fetch $120 and up....
and for some of my Lon Chaney movies, LD is the only source for now. God knows when they'll get around to releasing West of Zanzibar or He Who Gets Slapped on dvd.- housepig
