Nero released the latest update (6.6.0.1) yesterday. Does anyone have any comments about it? Does it fix any known problems? Does it have any new features? Will software like DVD Shrink that uses Nero to burn with work OK with the new version of Nero?

I noticed the update too yesterday. I decided against it because there is always something about a version 0.1 that screams "buggy" to me. I think I will wait for a more patched version 6.6.

It's funny, I work in a software lab and our management won't allow a release to have a .1 version for that very same reason. Our .1 releases usually end up as a .11 or .2 release.

Does anyone ever try to compare Recode2 and DVDshrink's quality yet? I'm just curious which one is better and I know it's made by the same person.

I've tried recode versus shrink once or twice, and haven't seen too much of a difference. The biggest thing that I've noticed is that recode will not process encrypted disks, so you have to rip from decrypter before you can use recode.

I tried the latest version of Recode yesterday on LOTR-ROTK and The Last Samurai. I thought it did a better job on LOTR than Shrink and in half the time. I had tried earlier versions but wasn't impressed. End result was viewed on a 32inch TV showing a lot less pixellation in the places that IC8,DVD2One,CloneDVD2 had problems with. Just run AnyDVD so no ripping required. I plan on trying some more movies but at this stage it looks like a keeper.

    Nero update. Again and Again.
Why they update so often and why why their update are so big? 80mg here, 26 mb there and oops, another 20 something meg over there. Gee, are they are partnering with high speed internet providers?

As long as the updates improve the product and fix any bugs that is the main thing.
I suppose any particular update entails a complete reprogrammimg of a file and will have consequences requiring the same of other files. I noticed that nero.exe itself is nearly 15,000 KB and probably needs updated each time.

Nero is not alone of course. Yesterday I updated iTunes 4.6 to 4.7 and that was nearly 20MB.

Well, I finally updated to 6.6.0.1 about two weeks ago and I've just finished uninstalling it and reinstalling 6.3.1.25.

I didn't like it at all. Burns came out bad and verification was very weird. I never had such issues with 6.3.1.25 so I decided to ditch it.

My advice is DO NOT update, or not until version 2 anyway.

Nero is not alone of course. Yesterday I updated iTunes 4.6 to 4.7 and that was nearly 20MB.
iTunes? Ewwwwwwww. Hehe. Look who's talking, I use Winamp, AOL's little electric eye.

For anybody else who is interested in getting the 6.3.1.25 version instead of the newest one, it can be found on the NERO site too, here:

My Nero upgrade policy is to upgrade once for every major version number increase (and possibly some subsequent minor version # updates, 'til I find a version that works OK with my system). To keep up with every minor version # update is insane.

I have version 6.6.0.0 which I have been using for some time. I have only had one bad disc. The burn process went fine, with no error messages, but for some reason, when I put the disc in later, it showed up as blank. Other than that, I've had no problems. In fact, I don't think I've ever had problems with Nero other than that one disc.

I don't think it's insane. I kept up with each minor update and still had enough time to live a normal productive life.

Well, I have a feeling our views on "normal productive live" differs, but I was more thinking about the product - it's not like every new Nero release is better (in respect to my system) than the previous - more like a crazy roller coaster ride that in the long run take me higher, but at times gets too close to the ground before turning uphill again. I like to think that at least major releases improves upon previous major.

  19. When I upgraded to 6.6.x from 6.3.x, I Nero Burning ROM and Recode 2 were no longer included in the menu. (Nero Express was.) I reinput the serial number from 6.3.xx, but it did not work

I had to go all the way back to the serial number of the OEM version (6.00.28) that came with my burner to get Nero Recode 2 to activate. Nero Burning ROM still would not.

    Anyone else experience this?
