Hello,
WIRELESS NEWBIE NEEDS HELP
I don't believe I have a free pci slot for a wireless transmitter so I would be forced to use usb. But I only have usb1.1. Would this negate the speed of 802.11G?????
Also, to go from a (DSL speed) desktop to a xbox would I need just a wireless router and a xbox wireless receiver???? Or do I need a transmitter AND a router and the receiver?????
Suggestions would be useful....![]()

Yes. 802.11g is 54Mbps, USB 1.1 is 10-11Mbps. You may as well use a B wireless antenna if you're going to use USB 1.1 as they have the same bandwidth.

here's the thing...
wireless speed has to do with 2 things
internet speed - should not be affected much [you may see a slight decrease when compared to a PCI card]
Network speed. this has to do with the b/g rating of the card and the router.
you only say would b negate the speed of g. the answer is yes. its backwards compatible but cant push g's network speed. but remember this is only networking [ie file share]
the internet speed should not be affected much.
per the x-box stuff cant help you there. i would assume if you want x-box wireless it needs a wierless reciever to go off your router
i have PS2 and jsut hook it directly to my router so im not sure about x-box net connection -
Here is a solution a buddy of mine used, he says it works flawlessly. He has DSL and says he doesn't notice a difference in speed when playing XBox Live. I am going to purchase the same type of set-up, but probably a better wireless router and bridge. I haven't made the purchase just yet, waiting on some money. If you scan the XBox Live website, Linksys and Dlink are the only routers certified for XBox, doesn't mean others won't work, just means XBox techincal support will only help with those (ie, they paid money to Microsoft).

Also, not sure of the USB speed question. I would connect the computer to the router (using a CAT5 cable) and then the modem to the router. If you don't have a CAT5 connection I would purchase a CAT5 PCI card, you can pick one up for $10-$20. -
Hello,
Thanks guys!
I'll check in to your responses at home when I can do some more research

For your desktop PC I'd recommend wired vs wireless. Although wireless does have its advantages, it's nice to have your main PC connected directly to the router whenever you need to make configuration changes. Not to mention that it's faster and uses less overhead.

Hello,
Thanks all for writing in...
Viral1 - the main reason for wanting a wireless is my desktop is upstairs and my xbox is downstairs (too long to run a cable and be able to hide it)
And also... I'd like to be able to surf with my old laptop while watching tv
-------------------------------------
I think I've decided I'll go with 802.11 B. I'm not going to be doing any heavy wireless data transfers... I just want to be able to beam the dsl signal to the laptop and the xbox...
It sounds like I should be able to get a b transmitter and b receiver really cheap
One more question - Do the B transmitter operate on 2.4ghz range???? If so would having a 900 mhz wireless phone interefere or should the B transmitter be high enough to bypass the interference?????
Thanks again.....

Also not that if you have any b wireless devices on a g network it will slow the g items to to b speed to make it backwards compatible it you want ot ustilize the g speed you have to have all g ethernet devices conncted to the router
I would say go with which ever router is the cheapest that day at the store, Since you dont wont to transfer any big files the b would work just fine. I did just buy a g lnksys router in a local store I couldnt find any b ones there and I was just ready to get a router since my old one froze up one me when I tried to change the settings and it was stuck at the default settings (had one neighbor happy they were getting free internet but I solved that little problem)

But since this is my first attempt at a wireless network I'm just going to go with the B and be done with it
Thanks everyone!

What about the phone question??? I have a 900 mhz wireless but don't the B range use 2.4ghz??? That should be ok right???
