  1. Im trying to capture an older VHS tape with my ATI 9800 AIW.

However, the result looks just like the bottom of this page,
    http://www.nepadigital.com/mv

I get that "white band" across the top of the video using Pinnacle Studio, and with ATI's MMC, I get a much smaller, but still noticible white band and a small blur at the bottom.

Any suggestions, other than buying a TBC VCR, whatever that is.

    Hey, that's a fabulous link......

The short answer is no. As it states in my article you may be able to get by with cheaper video enhancers such as the ones SIMA makes. A TBC or VCR w/TBC are your best bet. A TBC will fix a whole hell of lot more than the issue with the ATI.

Suggest you get in touch with ATI and ask them what are the affects on the video when it's detected as having MV. I would love to hear the answer.

  5. I spoke with ATI - he basically said some people get lucky and some don't. He said there might be some hacks out there to install to get around the macrovison, but... Otherwise, that's just the way it is. Not much help, actually. PLEASE post any results if you find any becuase I'm dying to transfer some stuff. I don't want to pay $300 or so to get some sort of macrovision buster box to defeat it.

    As I suspected: "duh".

Sorry friend, you're out of luck. You will be with most cards, recorders and VCRs. You live in a society where copyright has been perverted in definition. This is the outcome.

Bullshit, there's nothing for the newer cards. It can't be done, I spent the good part of a month trying to get it to work. Call me stubborn. Why should you need a hack in the first place anyway?

that's just the way it is.
More bullshit, return it. State explicity why. Feel free to point them to my page for examples. I would love to hear from the people at ATI. www.nepadigital.com/mv

If you have a Best Buy or similar store near you with a liberal return policy try out some of the SIMA video enhancers. I never got the chance to try one on the ATI but had the same situation with a Nvidia card and it worked.

If you think your going to be doing a lot of analog video get a TBC, you will not be disappointed. I did a few captures from a Hi-8 cam and IMO the final DVD product was superior even to the direct cam to TV connection. (Slight noise reduction filter added too)
