  1. The link is http://www.daytek.ca/dvrp30.html

And I wonder if it is a rebranded Cyberhome or Lite-On.

    Anyone know?

    Tom,

Did you write that you picked a Daytek up? If so what do you think? I've had one for about a week now with out any problems. I'm just using cheap Mitsumi brand dvd+rw disks that I got from Futureshop.

My only complaint so far is that when you finish watching a dvd you get the blue Daytek screen. You need to cycle through your sources to get back to watching tv.

Yep, just got a Daytek today, and a new TV to feed the Daytek in to. So far, so good, but then it's only been setup for a few hours. I was more impressed with the 6 hour recording than I thought I would be.

I'll see how editable the files are on my computer and then post further. I also want to record from my laptop > s-video > DVD+RW and see how that goes.

  4. Using DVD Decryptor, I was able to grab the individual 'shows' or portions that I recorded (DVD Decryptor 3.1.9 in IFO mode) to my hard drive, and then edit out the commercials in mpeg-vcr, and get the edited mpegs back onto a DVD using Ulead DVD Moviefactorym and hey play in my DVD players. I'm happy.

There are probably better bargins to be had (in the States though, not in Canada that I am aware of), but this was pretty inexpensive for $400 Cdn

  5. It's been reported elsewhere, but for those who have got the DVR-P30 you can make your unit region and macrovision free by doing the following.

    1) go into the setup menu
    2) scroll down to, and highlight (not press) the exit key
    3) Press the following numbers (do not press enter, just the numbers); 2 9 6 0
    4) You'll have access to another menu that allows you to select your region (indeed, making it region free), and to disable macrovision detection).

Tom, you can also dowload the latest firmware from the Lite-on site if you enter a serial number that starts with 010. I've downloaded it but have not updated until I know whether I'm keeping it or not.

  7. I tried entering a serial number as stated and could not download the
firmware from the site. I was wondering if the software update kills
the Macrovision and regional code 2960 menu?
I have the Daytek DVR-30 and would hate to lose the Macrovision
bypass option as this is the only standalone DVD recorder I know
    that offers this option.

Yes, any software update that you can download will kill the macrovision defeat. And, as much as I would like some of the features that are supposed to be in the 1157 firmware (such as 3 hour record mode, one touch recording and some editing dunctions), I do not want to give up rhe ability to record macrovision protcted DVDs.

  9. Thanks for the reply Thomas. So if the update kills the Macrovision
bypass option then i will stay with the same original code.
I can always edit with my computer system.

I guess no one has the original code that was placed on these units,
so they could be flashed back to OEM if wanted.
I have not updated before but guess it is performed by downloading
the code to a cd and then booting the recorder with the cd in the
    unit to flash the update?

I would be interested to see if the Daytek/Liteon have a tsop on the
unit so the code could be dumped. Anyone know what the flash file
    size is 1-2Mb?

  10. I believe that the Daytek has a different DVD burner than the Liteon 5001, the Daytek has a DDW-411s and the Liteon has a LDW-411s.

Has anybody tried flashing the Daytek DVR-30 with any version of the liteon 5001 firmware yet?

I was going to get one of these DVR-P30's this week when I read that the LiteOn 5001 & 5005 models (which apparently this model is based on) only record television audio in mono.

Has anyone been able to confirm if the Daytek DVR-P30 also does this? (ie. record television audio in mono only)

    I read this at:
    http://www.cdrlabs.com/articles/index.php?articleid=28&page=3
    where it says:
One thing that I should point out is that the audio recorded through the TV tuner is mono only. While the tuner is receiving a stereo signal, the onboard chip is encoding it in mono mode. According to Lite-On, this solution provided the best stability and compatibility at the time of the LVW-5001's release. If you need stereo sound, you can get around this limitation by using an external tuner like a cable box or satellite receiver and connecting it to the inputs on the back of the unit.

I almost asked this question to the sales guy at Futureshop, but then stopped and laughed - like they've ever known anything about the stuff they sell...

Is there a firmware or other fix for this?

    Peace,

  12. Does anybody know if the Daytek DVR-P30 works with Bell Expressvu's 3100 receiver? i.e. Can you set a "VCR" code that from the receiver to to the DVR-P30 that will start and stop recording based on schedules record schedules you create on the Bell receiver.

that sounds pretty complicated, you probably have to manually type them in in the "timer".

that 3 hour LP feature that comes with the new liteon 5001 firmware looks nice, but still wondering whether it will work.

  14. I just bought a newer Daytek P30. I tried the code to unlock it and all it did was remove region codes and not the macrovision. I guess Daytek updated the firmware to prevent the code from working.

Anyone know of a new code or firmware upgrade to fix this problem?
    Anyone else experience this problem?

I bought a P30 last year and it works fine on the older ones.

    cdnuser,

I did a search earlier on the Liteon 5001 firmware and apparently there are numerous hacks for that model that will work on the daytek - one in particular offers 3 hr recording mode, as well as macrovision defeat. I am at my place of work right now so I cannot remember my firmware version, but when I get home tonight I plan to check, as I would like 3 hr capability when transferring some of my old beta tapes.

I did not realise that my recordings from TV were only mono - kinda hard to tell with my old ears, although I am usually pretty sensitive to that kind of thing - can someone explain how the passthru method works? I have a pretty decent Toshiba VCR in the same cabinet, so I could use that tuner. Do I just plug the outputs into the front panel (AV1) inputs and choose that as the "source"?
    Sounds logical and resonable!

  16. I also bought a P30 man. date Aug 2004.
I have not been able to update firmware.
    Unit says firm. is 1090.
I could use some help too.
