  1. I have a daytek p30 recorder. about 6 months ago, it started acting up with dvd+RW... so i was gonna try dvd+R. I bought some HP 16x DVD+R at tigerdirect.ca but when i stick them in it just makes sounds and says PREPARING forever.

what type of DVD+R do you use that work?

  2. That Daytek is a clone of the Liteon units and operares much as a Ilo R04. The ilo is a liteon.

When you first said problems were with +RW disks, It might have been a disk management one but than you said the problems, were also with +R disks.

I would think the problem is Not with the Disks. I use mainly Verbatim but a number of brands have worked well and the disk max. speed would not be a factor as the unit operates within its parameters in play and copy.

It really sounds as the DVD drive is failing but it can be replaced. In my view that unit is well worth the effort
    I have 8 Liteon/ilo units. All but 2 have a replaced drive

Remember!! That Dayteck is a liteon clone and any info on the ilo or Liteon is relevant.
Check these sites for info and problem solving.

  3. let me clarify... a few months ago dvd+rw discs that were not new, (had been recorded then erased) would not work in the daytek... it would failed on erasing or say recording but would not stop or would not playback afterward...

so i determined that the problem was with 'used' dvdrw media.

so i wanted to try write once dvd+r... so i bought the hp dvd+r discs, but they didn't work - these are the discs and it looks like others have had trouble with them as well https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia/hp-dvd-r-cmc-mag-m01-16/3756

maybe I'll try some verbatim dvd+r as vertabim as always been good to me in the past.

outta curiousity, what's involved in replacing the laser drive? how tough is it, where do i get a replacement and what steps?

The HP 16x DVD+R (CMC) work in my Lite-On recorder. The symtons do seem like a failing drive.

Visit the Liteon Recorder Forum on www.cdfreaks.com, there are detailed drive replacement instructions for Lite-On recorders.

I use INFODISCA1 DVD+RW (Memorex brand) on mine, had those discs for about 5 years now. About 35% of the original stock are left, others died, craters mostly. I don't have good luck with SONY DVD+R in recorders, only burners. Verbatim can go either way. Most others fail like the crap they are. My laser is probably aging.

The issue of the +RW disks not being accepted or saying they are recording but are not, is an issue that the disks may not have been erased properly in the machine. That is an issue in itself and is not necessarily a drive problem.

BUT you stated the unit would also not record on a +R disk. It might not but It Sounds as the DVD drive might be going bad.

Both I and oldandintheway have given you the sites to go to for info on HDD upgrades and the problems with the DVD drive and its replacement.

    AGAIN
That Daytek is a liteon clone and is internally the same. The firmware may be different but much of the info at these sites while they may be for the liteo/ilo (ARE – RELITIVE).
The same for some Gateway units.

    PS
If you want to get rid of the Daytek let me know as I would buy it (if the price is ok)
