I need to take a pure MPEG-2 file (generated with a video capture board) and encode it XviD. One complication is that I need to edit the video (cut out commercials), and I'd like to do this in the minimum number of steps.
Here's what I'm thinking:
1. DVD2AVI to get a d2v file and the audio (wav format)
2. Use AVISynth to frameserve to VDMod where the XviD encoding will happen
3. Add the audio with video in VDMod and edit out commercials
4. Save resulting avi file (now xvid with wav audio)
5. Demux the now correct audio wav
6. Encode it to VBR mp3 or OGG
7. Mux the mp3 or ogg into the video
Is there a way to do this in fewer steps? It would be ideal if I could some how make the cut points in step 1.
Thanks for the ideas all!

Ummm, I think Auto GK works with files as well as with DVD's. I've used it in that I've got a Hauppage PVR250 card and have been capturing some TV episodes off my Dish Network. I used VideoReDo to edit the commercials out, then use Auto GK in file mode to encode it to xvid. Just select file instead of DVD and all is well....
